Zaccardo stays perfect on the mound for Navs

University of Connecticut freshman Michael Zaccardo proved to be the stopper for the North Shore Navigators last night, shutting down the visiting New Bedford Bay Sox as the Navs won 3-1 at Fraser Field.

The 6-foot-2 Zaccardo, now 4-0 on the season, tossed 6.1 scoreless innings and scattered five hits while North Shore improved to 16-8 on the season.

All the offense the Navs needed came in the sixth, when they broke up what had been a scoreless pitcher duel between Zaccardo and the Bay Sox' Brian Stroud.

Catcher Mike Dowd landed the first blow with an RBI single, and designated hitter John Hill connected with the K.O. — a two-run triple. Scoring the runs were Mike Lebel, Patrick Brady and Dowd.

North Shore's Chris Kowalski earned his fifth save of the year with a perfect ninth in which he fanned two. Centerfielder Tre Dennis, meanwhile, extended his hitting streak to 12 games.

The Navs hit the road tonight, visiting North Adams for a 7 p.m. start.
