Swampscott stays hot despite playoff chances dwindling

A slow start to the summer for the Swampscott Legion team could save some Zone 8 playoff contenders from the daunting task of meeting the Mariners in the postseason.

Winners of eight of their last nine games, the Mariners are the hottest team in the league, but even after last night's 14-4 victory over Peabody they need some help to get into the playoffs.

Swampscott has to win its final two games against Lawrence (on the road tomorrow, 4) and Revere (Monday night), and get losses from either Saugus or Lynn Connery.

Peter Kinchley got the win in a rain-shortened game last night, allowing only one earned run, striking out five and giving up seven hits.

Steve Moran, Chris Cameron and Phil Witt each had two hits and three RBIs for Swampscott (9-6).

"It's bizarre. Saugus and Connery both have one tough game and one other game against a team that is not bad, but is out of it. But you never know who's going to show up," Swampscott manager Jeff Newhall said. "I think we have the pitching to do well in a short series and we're playing well now."

Kent Graham went 3 for 3 with a run and an RBI as the Navs pounded out 15 hits for a victory. John Folino picked up the win with six shutout innings. He allowed four hits and struck out two.

Sean McNaughton drove in a pair of runs, while Kyle Geason, Tyler Kuehl and Mike Provencher each knocked in one.
