Beverly upset highlights first round of NSHSBL playoffs

The Beverly High girls summer basketball team came into the North Shore High School Basketball League playoffs with only win, but that hardly mattered last night as the Panthers pulled off the upset of the first round.

Meg Chatellier scored 10 points and Kayla Deedy chipped in nine as Beverly defeated Stoneham, 34-29. Stoneham lost just two games during the regular season.

In other action, Danvers, led by 14 points from Erica Veilleux, edged Austin Prep, 32-27. Gabby Parker scored 10 for Austin Prep. Ipswich also won, pounding Wakefield, 42-16. Leah Webb led the way for the Tigers with 13 points and Audrey Shaughnessy also hit double figures with 10. Ashley Reynolds scored five to lead Wakefield.

Play in the double-elimination tournament will continue tomorrow night with Wakefield playing Austin Prep at 7 p.m., Bishop Fenwick and Beverly squaring off at 8, and Ipswich and Danvers finishing the night of games at 9.
