Catching Up With ... Bishop Fenwick hoopster Abby Poeske

What was it like to play outdoors in the North Shore High School Basketball League this summer?

It's more for fun than anything else. AAU ball is something I do almost year round, but the summer league is more laid back. It's just a bunch of girls getting together to play.

What AAU team are you with?

The Renegades. We play all spring, then in some fall tournaments. The coaches give us a lot of individual attention and things to work on.

Since that's the case, what are the benefits of playing in the North Shore high school league?

You learn to improvise. When you have plays that break down, you have a chance to improvise and make something good happen.

Did you get pretty good attendance from your Fenwick teammates for the summer games?

Everyone showed up pretty regularly. We all love it and there was a lot of (bonding). We all get along; sometimes that's pretty difficult to do in high school. Bridget Dullea and Lauran DiCarlo are the captains and both of them are great players and great kids.

How about when you're with the AAU Renegades? What do you have to work on?

My quickness, especially on defense. And I have to be able to get open on offense. I was a support player last year, so I'm hoping I can do more scoring next season (at Bishop Fenwick)

How do you want your senior season at Bishop Fenwick to go?

I want to leave everything out there. I won't be playing in college, so I want to leave everything on the court.

What colleges are you looking at?

I've looked at a ton of schools. My older sister, Maggie, is two years ahead of me and she's at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. I know about that school and I've been looking at Vanderbilt, UVA (University of Virginia), William & Mary, Northwestern, Marquette and others.

No local colleges?

It's not that I want to get away from home, but at my age there are so many opportunities out there. I want to do it while I can.

Has your sister, Maggie, been a big influence on you?

We're really close friends. My sister played soccer and basketball at Bishop Fenwick, and she's kind of calmer than I am. She knows when to take it easy. She's really supportive.

You're one of the top students at Bishop Fenwick. What is that like when you're also playing sports?

Just ask my teammates. On those long bus rides, I usually have my textbook open. I'm the team nerd. My teammates laugh. We laugh together and it's awesome.

What would you like to do after college?

Get into education. I'd like to become a teacher, a principal or a superintendent.

What's your favorite subject in school?

U.S. history. Whenever we used to go on vacation, my dad would drag us to forts and historic sites and I thought it was boring. But I took AP U.S. history (last year) and now it's just much more interesting.

How about music? Have you gone to any good concerts this year?

I've never been to one. Jack Johnson was in Boston and I missed it; I was so upset. Going to a concert is on my life-to-do list.
