GIRLS SOCCER
Masconomet and Newburyport appeared headed for a draw for the second straight season. That was before Lucy Gildein decided to settle things.
With 30 seconds left in regulation, Gildein took a crisp feed from Cara Connors dribbled around a pair of defenders and deposited the ball behind the Clippers' keeper to lift Masco (8-0) to a 2-1 win over the defending Division 3 state champs.
Katlin Sampson scored the Chieftains' other goal, with an assist from Gildein. Jamie White was outstanding in the backfield, helping hold Newburyport's high-powered offense to a single goal.
Waring 5, Montrose 5
Freshman Celia Balf of Beverly scored four second half goals to help Waring erase a 3-0 halftime deficit. Balf has scored nine goals in seven games for Waring (3-1-3). Allie Hinrichs also scored, while goalie Michelle Ammerman and striker Colleen O'Brien played well.
Bishop Fenwick 3, St. Mary's 1
Lauren Toye-O'Donnell and Kristin Verrette (her ninth and 10 goals) handled the scoring for the Crusaders, who pushed their record to 5-2-1. Bianca Gallo picked up an assist. Sara Previte had a solid game at center midfield for the winners.
Pingree 4, Lexington Christian 0
Junior Jaimie Cappucci of Saugus delivered a hat trick to propel the Highlanders, who are now 6-0. Caitlin Doherty scored the other goal. Kara Kovacev posted her fourth shutout in goal.
Hamilton-Wenham 3, Rockport 1
The Generals got their first win of the year behind a goal and two assists from Bianca Vecchiarello. Katie Toybne and Katie Flores also scored while Emily Bartlett has an assist an anchored the defense.
GOLF
Masconomet 181, Amesbury 116
The Chieftains improved to 11-3 behind Mike Pollack-Twomey, who accounted for 34 points. Other big scorers were Dan McQueen, Jim Dixon and Zach Ciampa, all of whom scored 32 points in the Cape Ann League match at Far Corner.
Beverly sweeps
Beverly ended up beating Lynn English, 49 1/2-22 1/2, and Lynn Classical, 44 1/2-27 1/2. The Panthers boosted their record to 9-4.
The Panthers were keyed by Nick Pinciaro and Austin Butler, who each shot 37 at Gannon in Lynn. Ryan Lally shot a 38 for Beverly and Adam Capodilupo had a 39.
Salem 36 1/2, Peabody 35 1/2
The Witches won only two of the individual matches but still had enough to edge Peabody. Wes Koen, who eagled the par-4 5th hole, was the medalist with a 36 at Olde Salem Greens. He won his match 6 1/2-2 1/2, and Mike Doherty also won for Salem, 7 1/2-1 1/2. Pat Little halved his match for the Witches (9-6 overall).
Pat Trainor, Sean Craven, Ken D'Aggostino, Eric Kane and Greg Durant had wins for Peabody.
BOYS SOCCER
Masconomet 1, Newburyport 0
Fu Shahan buried a feed from John Miller with 11 minutes left in the opening half, and the undefeated Chieftains (9-0, 6-0 CAL) made it stand up. Marking back Steve Kracanas had an outstanding game and fullback Kevin Ivester also helped keeper Jon Doucette earn the shutout.
Bishop Fenwick 2, St. Mary's 1
Brandon Ballard scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner in dramatic fashion with three minutes left in regulation. Center back Conor McCormack and senior midfielder Eric Moreno both helped the Crusaders (5-4) hold off the Spartans.
Fellowship 5, North Shore 3
The Bulldogs couldn't overcome an early four-goal hole despite a number of chances generated by Tyler Barris. Joel D'Ambrosio, Tim Gil and Nick Damato scored the goals but it wasn't enough.
Haverhill 3, St. John's Prep 0
A strong Haverhill squad simply overpowered the Eagles (2-4-2), who hope to get back on the wining track tomorrow against Catholic Memorial.
Hamilton-Wenham 3, Rockport 0
Joe Savasta scored and fed Dan Congdon on a corner kick to lead the Generals (6-3). Jackson MacDonald had the shutout in net and Shawn Tucker and Chris Henchy added goals while Eric Kirlis also scored.
VOLLEYBALL
Peabody 3, Wilmington 1
Peabody outlasted the Wilmington Wildcats, 22-25, 25-16, 25-22, 25-15, and improved to 6-6. Janelle Rodriguez had eight kills, eight blocks and five tips for Peabody while Danielle Pierce and Cailin Griffin each had six kills. Mackenzie Carpenter had an outstanding match on defense.
Revere 3, Beverly 2
The Patriots rallied to win the final two games to edge the Panthers. Strong serving from Sabrina Salmela and a solid outing from Katina Pappas couldn't stop Revere from winning 13-25, 25-19, 16-25, 25-15, 15-10.
Masconomet 3, Hamilton-Wenham 0
Amanda Guidi was a consistent passer and was tough from the service line to help Masco inch closer to a tournament berth with 25-22, 25-22, 25-18 wins. Junior Lauren Fitzgerald also played well for the Chieftains (7-6).
Kim McKenna was a bright spot for the Generals (6-6), recording 15 service points.
FIELD HOCKEY
Masconomet 2, North Reading 0
Masco got a goal and an assist Carrie Turner and Sienna Epps also had a goal for the Chieftains, who hiked their record to 7-2-3. Marguex Guercia added an assist.
Swampscott 3, Everett 0
The Big Blue (6-2-3) got a pair of goals from Alex Wilson and a single tally courtesy of Taylor Maccario as they stopped the Crimson Tide. Kristin Santenello and Julie Lucio added assists and Kelly Gillis excelled in the midfield.
COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL
Stonehill 3, Endicott 0
Freshman Elyse Barbour recorded eight kills, but Division 2 Stonehill was too much for the Gulls (13-8) to handle in 25-16, 25-19, 25-18 defeats. Hayley Janelle posted five blocks despite Endicott's setback.
MEN'S COLLEGE SOCCER
Gordon 5, Anna Maria 0
Matt Horth and Archie Reed both had a goal and assist as Gordon (5-4-1) rolled at home. Nick Hanlon, Noah McGarr and Joel Spruance also found the back of the net for the winners, while Brian Schilling and Zach Grey combined on the shutout in goal.
