Marblehead's Schneider recalled to NHL by Canucks

Cory Schneider is back in The Show.

The 23-year-old goaltender from Marblehead has been recalled to the National Hockey League by the Vancouver Canucks. He will be in uniform tonight when the Canucks play the Kings in Los Angeles.

The Canucks needed goaltender insurance after all-star Roberto Luongo suffered a hairline fracture of one of his ribs this past weekend against the Toronto Maple Leafs and aggravated it Tuesday in a loss to the Detroit Red Wings. He's expected to be out at least a week, possibly longer.

In the interim, former Boston Bruins keeper Andrew Raycroft becomes the Canucks' starter, with Schneider scheduled to back him up.

The 6-foot-2 netminder will be making his second appearance in the NHL. Last season when Luongo was injured, Schneider appeared in eight games and went 2-4-1 with a 3.38 goals-against average for Vancouver.

Playing in the American Hockey League with the Manitoba Moose this season, Schneider has a 6-3 record with a 2.41 GAA and .910 save percentage. The AHL's reigning Goaltender of the Year leads the league in victories and has one shutout.

Schneider, a former Phillips Andover and Boston College star, was a first round selection (26th overall) by the Canucks in the 2004 NHL entry draft.
