NEC field hockey champ Beverly ousted in state tournament
FIELD HOCKEY
DIVISION 1 NORTH TOURNEY
Brookline 2, Beverly 1: The fifth seeded Panthers were upset in the first round of the MIAA Division 1 North Tournament by the 12th seeded Brookline squad. Beverly took a 1-0 lead into halftime on a goal from Corey Konaxis, but Brookline had a boy from Italy who was able to control the majority of play from midfield throughout the second half. Abbey Fleming tallied four saves in the losing effort for the Panthers, who ended their season with a record of 13-3-1.
CHELMSFORD 3, PEABODY 1: The Tanners, who were the No. 9 seed in Division 1 North, fell to No. 8 Chelmsford. Peabody trailed 3-0 in the opening half and scored with just two remaining. Jen Kasper scored the Tanners goal unassisted. Kate Manzi, Andrea Saccardo and Christina Simoes stood out on defense for Peabody, along with Morgan Yeo and Kim Lupo. Peabody finished 11-4-4.
GIRLS SOCCER
Waring 1, Montrose 0: Celia Balf scored the only goal of the game midway through the first half as Waring triumphed in the Independent Girls Conference championship game. Rowena Schenck posted the shutout in goal with 10 saves.
BOYS SOCCER
waring 3, cambridge weston 1: Second half goals by seniors Nate DiMarco and Ted Lyman helped Waring take home the Massachusetts Bay Independent League title. Tim Allen also scored while Peter Howes had a strong title game and keeper Jake Wortman made seven saves.
WOMEN'S COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL
Roger Williams 3, Endicott 0: The Gulls were upset by the Hawks 3-0 in the TCCC semi-final last night at Endicott College. Roger Williams used scores of 25-22, 25-22, and 25-20 to complete the upset. Stephanie Wiese had a team-high 11 kills, while Brittany Phillips finished with 10 kills, 10 digs, and five aces in the losing effort.
