Duggan nets winner as Team USA
tops Canada at Four Nations Cup
Canada has taken the last two Olympic gold medals in women's ice hockey. But in a few months in Vancouver, Meghan Duggan and Team USA are looking to turn that around.
Duggan sent Team USA's latest message to their neighbors to the North yesterday, as the Danvers native netted the game-winner to lift the Americans over Canada, 3-2, in pool play at the Four Nations Cup in Viermuki, Finland.
The teams meet again in tonight's championship game. Helped by Duggan, who's had a wealth of international experience, Team USA has won the last two World Championships and is the defending Four Nations Cup champ as well.
With the teams deadlocked 2-2, Duggan put Team USA on top for good with only 14 seconds left in the second period. Her University of Wisconsin teammate Hilary Knight notched a goal and an assist while the Badgers' ace goaltender Jessie Vetter stopped 20 shots.
Duggan helped the Badgers win the NCAA title last season as a junior and is taking the year off from school to play for Team USA. She is one of the 23 players under consdieration for the US Olympic team set to play in Vancouver early next year; the squad will have to cut two players before the Olympic games.
