Tanners move on in volleyball tourney

VOLLEYBALL

Peabody 3, Medford 0: Brianna Waldrop recorded seven kills and one block, while Brittney Figueria tallied 15 service points for the Tanners (15-4), who swept their Division 1 North opener 25-22, 25-18, 25-10.. Danielle Pierce registered three kills and one ace, and Jillian Rizzo played well defensively for Peabody, which plays next Tuesday night at home against the winner of Chelmsford/Methuen match.

bedford 3, bp. fenwick 1: The Lady Crusaders bowed out of the Division 2 North tournament after dropping a tough 28-26 decision in the fourth set. Dianna Tauro recorded 12 kills with 11 digs and senior captain Cathy Bruce dished out 15 assists, but Fenwick fell 12-25, 25-19, 25-22, 28-26 and wraps up the season 11-8.

FIELD HOCKEY

A-B 2, Masconomet 0: The Chieftains were blanked when they visited the No. 1 seed of the Division 1 North tournament. Goalkeeper Olivia Lobdell tallied 12 saves, while Lauren Pazdzoirny and Sydney Godett played very well defensively for Masco (10-8-3). Brooke Stewart handled her tough task in shadowing one of the highest scorers in the state in Alexa Sikalis from Acton-Boxboro, by only allowing her to score once.

Man.-essex 1, Bp. Fen. 0: Goalkeeper Casey Landry made five saves in the losing effort for the Crusaders, while Stephanie Morrison and Jackie Felteau played well defensively. The loss ends Bishop Fenwick's 2009 season, as they finished the year 13-6-1.

GIRLS SOCCER

Pingree 4, Newton 2: Jenn Newman scored twice, while Jaimie Cappucci tallied a goal and an assist for the Highlanders (10-1-2). Alex Karamitsios rounded out the scoring, and Kaitlyn Oliver added an assist in the winning effort. Kara Kovacev tallied eight saves to earn the victory for Pingree.

BOYS SOCCER

Pingree 3, Landmark 0: Gabe Wallis, Peter Seigel and Ben Coleman all scored for the Highlanders, who improve to 10-2-3. Nick Graham finished the game with two assists, while Patrick Williamson only saw three shots and didn't need to save any of them to pick up his ninth shutout victory on the year.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Pingree Takes 4th: Four of the Highlanders top seven runners were not able to compete yesterday because of the flu, but that didn't stop Pingree from finishing fourth out of nine teams at the Eastern Independent Championships. Julie McDonough finished in 21:14 to place sixth overall, while Mary-Kate Surrette (21:43) placed ninth overall. Maddie Dwortz (22:02) was the next to finish, claiming eleventh overall yesterday at Franklin Park in Boston.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Pingree Finishes 7th: The Highlanders took seventh out of nine teams yesterday at Franklin Park in Boston, where they competed in the Eastern Independent Championships. Max Goldstein finished 27th overall for the Highlanders in 19:31. Calvin Gonzalez was the next to cross for Pingree, and he took 39th overall with a time of 20:15.
