Fox leads Prep to quarterfinal victory

BOYS SOCCER

The St. John's Prep soccer team is in the process of making a state tournament run that most people didn't expect to happen until next year.

The Eagles got a goal from Jon Woelfel off a throw-in from senior captain Owen Fox 20 seconds into the game and held on for a 1-0 victory over Madison Park in the Division 1 North quarterfinals.

St. John's, which got excellent play from James O'Leary, Matt Kacinski and Sean Callahan, has won three tournament road games against higher seeded opponents.

"We scored an early goal and made it stand up," Prep coach Dave Crowell said. "It was a great game. They were a good team with skilled players who moved the ball well."

Hamilton-Wenham 2, Lynnfield 1

Generals co-captain Jon Britton sent a direct kick from 22 yards out into the net two minutes into overtime to lift H-W to the Division 3 North semifinals. Hamilton-Wenham topped their Cape All League rivals for the third time this year behind a goal from sweeper Chris Hinchey as well as strong play from keeper Jackson MacDonald and Joe Savasta.

Tyngsboro 1, Bishop Fenwick 0

In the North Division 3 quarter final matchup, Fenwick allowed a goal late in the first half and that was all Tyngsboro needed to move on. All the Fenwick seniors played great.

St. Mary's Lynn 2, Shawsheen 1

Peabody native Julian Yourawski had both goals on assists Eric Donegey as the Spartans (10-7-2) advanced to tomorrow's semifinals in Division 3 North by beating the No. 2 seed.

GIRLS SOCCER

Reading 2, Marblehead 1

The Magicians took the early lead on Mary Keroack's goal, assisted by Lizzy Whitehill, but Reading tied it with 10 minutes left in regulation and won the penalty kick shootout, 3-1, to oust Marblehead from the Division 2 North tourney.

Marblehead (11-7-2) got excellent performances from Emma Crowley and Whitehill in midfield, Sarah Noyes on defense and Silvie Cohen in goal, said coach Sam Yawson.
