Balanced scoring keys Pingree in basketball opener
BOYS BASKETBALL
Pingree 74, Berwick Academy 36
The Highlanders opened the season in impressive fashion with a road win in the Eastern Independent League.
Coach Steve Gibbs team had five players in double figures, led by Allen Williamson, who finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Lamarre Rey added 16 points while Brandon Parker, Brendan Oliver and Jolmi Minaya each had 10 points off the bench.
Pingree dominated in every way, shooting 68 percent from the floor while holding Berwick to 28 percent shooting. The Highlanders play their home opener tomorrow against Bancroft.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Pingree 40, Brooks 39
Senior small forward Liv Whitney of Danvers scored 21 points and grabbed seven boards as the Highlanders started the season with a narrow win at home. Pingree led by two (20-18) at halftime and held on for the victory in the second half.
Ari Twomey dropped in 10 points for Pingree, while Brooks was led by Bridget Leahy, who had 18.
HOCKEY
Belmont Hill 3, Pingree 0
Playing its opener on the road, Pingree was competitive against Belmont Hill, which has had 10 Olympians over the years.
Pingree goalie Trevor Leahy finished with 39 saves and Adam Rimmer played a strong game on defense, said Buddy Taft, whose team played Belmont Hill for the first time in his coaching career.
VOLLEYBALL
Milton Academy 3, Pingree 2
Pingree extended Milton Academy to the limit but lost, 25-13, 25-17, 20-25, 24-26, 24-26, 15-7. Middle hitters Kara Kovacev and Haley Hunziker stood out for Pingree.
