Boston pro tennis team to leave Middleton for new court in Manchester

Boston’s professional tennis team will call the Manchester Athletic Club home next summer.

The Boston Lobsters, Boston’s World TeamTennis franchise, announced this morning that it will leave the Ferncroft Country Club in Middleton, its base for the past five years, for a new show court to be built at the MAC’s facility off Atwater Avenue in Manchester, according to the team’s announcement.

The new show court at the MAC's SkyJax Park will also host several MAC tournaments and community tennis events. The team and the MAC have plans to improve the park as well, the announcement indicates.

“The success in the North Shore is what led to the search for a new venue that will provide permanency and will continue to bring top tennis athletes to the area,” said Bahar Uttam, the Boston Lobsters’ CEO.

The MAC, whose tennis facilities are based in Manchester but which also has fitness center in Gloucester, is already a U. S. Tennis Association regional training center.

MAC General Manager Keith Callahan said this morning the club is proud of its association with the Boston Lobsters.

“So many of our tennis players have traveled to Lobster events,” Callahan said. “Now, having the Boston Lobsters at Manchester Athletic Club we believe will allow our members and residents of Cape Ann … (to) see some of the best tennis to be played in New England.”
