Yesterday’s win over Marblehead was a big one for the Beverly girls soccer team: Big in score and even bigger in significance.
The Panthers 7-1 victory of the Magicians bumped the club’s record to 9-2, qualifying Beverly for the Division 1 North state tournament.
“They (the Beverly players) knew it would be nice to get that accomplishment under our belt early,” head coach Kristin Simpson explained. “Now we can focus on getting (even) better.”
Eva Gordeau and Caitlin Harty did all the scoring yesterday with Godreau notching four goals and Harty adding a hat trick. Both girls had a pair of assists for good measure.
On the defensive side, junior captain Diandra Crowley was rock steady on the back line.
Phillips Exeter 2, Pingree 1: Charlotte Esty tied the game for Pingree (3-3) on an assist from Kerry Zerfoss but Pingree couldn’t hold on. Keeper Erin Cunningham made 13 to keep the Highlanders in the game.
Swampscott 4, Revere 2: In her very first varsity action Sarah Hingston scored to get things started for the Big Blue (6-2-3) while Melinda Wilson, Mackenzie Robertson and Shauna King also had markers. Senior Allison Ryan had a pair of assists at center forward.
Bp. Fenwick 2, Masconomet 2: Rose Fantozzi headed in a cross from Becky Mercuro and Jackie Edgett scored off a pass from Jenny Nasser as Fenwick improved to 6-3-4. Senior Gina Vellucci and junior Mary Difilippo anchored the Crusaders defensively. Masco (7-2-2) had goals from Lexi Sheehan (assisted by Alexa Ina) and Leah Connerty (assisted by Claudia Marsh).
Waring 3, Cambridge/Weston 1: Amanda Adams and Ayla Rauhala each had a goal and an assist in the Waring victory.
Salem 3, winthrop 2: Captain Alix Bryant’s direct kick goal gave Salem (3-5-2) the lead and Gabby Rocheville’s marker on a Deema Hejleh cross extended the lead as the Witches prevailed under the lights. Senior Joy Lima scored Salem’s first goal just 30 seconds into the game on an excellent feed from Katherine Towey.
