Area roundup: Beverly girls qualify for state tournament


Marblehead 15, Winthrop 50: John Howard won the 2.67 mile race in 14:48 followed by Chris Wigglesworth (15:10) in second and Nick Carr (15:12) in third as the Magicians improved to 4-2

Peabody 21, Beverly 35: Drew Fossa’s 14:38 was good for first overall as the Tanners remained unbeaten at 6-0. Rich Fornier was third for the Tanners in 15:47 followed by Ben Braz (15:48, 4th), Alex Marcus (15:52, 5th) and James Christopher (15:55, 7th). Alex Grecco was second for Beverly (4-2) in 14:55, Campbell Wood finished seventh in 15:58 and Michael Scott was tenth in 16:11.

Gloucester 28, Swampscott 32: Senior Peter Hale tied Swampscott’s 2.65-mile course record with a time of 13:37 and Matt Mahoney finished second in 13:49 but Gloucester grabbed sports 3-6 to win the meet. Robert McLaughlin finished seventh in 15:36 and the Big Blue’s top seven all ran personal best times.


St. Joseph’s 1, Endicott 0: The Gulls fell to 7-6-2 (2-2-1 CCC) in a road shutout. Freshman keeper Austin Peluso stopped six of the seven shots he faced.


Wheaton 2, Salem State 0: The Lady Vikings (6-5-1) fell to the top ranked team in New England as Wheaton recorded its fifth straight shutout. Salem State goalie Rachel Ledbetter made four saves.


Gordon 3, Salve Regina 2: Defender Katherine Bailey scored her first two goals of the season as Gordon improved to 2-3 on conference play with a home win. Melanie Landis also scored for the Scots (4-9 overall).
