Thursday's area roundup: Inspired second half sends Witches soaring past Beverly


Manchester 1, Rockport 0: Anna Heffernan scored for the Hornets (14-1) while senior Maddi Bistrong earned the shutout with six saves.

Newburyport 7, Hamilton-Wenham 0: The Generals (3-8) received solid defensive efforts from junior Taylor Ward and Caroline Fallon.


Bishop Fenwick 3, Arch. Williams 0: With a 25-17, 25-18, 25-15 sweep the Crusaders (13-4) earned a share of the Catholic Central League title. Junior Kate Lipka led the way with 15 kills and two blocks, Gianna Pizzano had 13 kills and Tessa McLaughlin contributed 30 assists.

North Shore Tech/Essex Aggie 3, Northeast 0: The Bulldogs (11-4) swept 25-16, 25-21, 25-8 thanks to Kiley Morgan’s excellent setting. Emma Brouchard had a solid match in the hitting department and Zoe Barnes had a good serving outing.


Salem State 5, UMass-Dartmouth 3: The Lady Vikings (8-4) outlasted the Corsairs in the Little East semi-finals, advancing to tomorrow’s conference final at Bridgewater State. Michelle McEwen/Jessica Spinale and Maddy Ward/Anna Yaskell won the top two doubles matches to put SSU on top while Ward and Spinale won straight singles matches. Sophomore Lauren Woods then won at No. 6 singles to clinch the victory for Salem State.


Colby-Sawyer 3, Endicott 1: The Gulls (10-17) won the first set but dropped the next three to lose the match on the road. Mackenzie Guerre had 10 kills and Ashley Norley came up with 25 digs for Endicott.

Salem St. 3, MCLA 1: Emily Peay recorded 11 kills as the Lady Vikings (4-14) earned their second MASCAC win, 25-21, 22-25, 25-13, 25-23. Peabody native Mackenzie Carpenter had 26 assists for the winners.
