Area roundup: Masconomet boys finish season with undefeated record

Masconomet wins two: Adam Grammer and Michael Ennis each scored goals for the Chieftains in their 2-0 victory over Merrimack Valley Champion North Andover. The entire team played well and were led by goalkeeper Derek Grammer and center back Tighe VanLenten. John Black recorded the team’s fifth shutout in a row in yesterday’s 4-0 win over North Reading as the Chieftains finish the season undefeated at 16-0-2. Chip Sherman and Edison Forbes each recorded with a goal and an assist. Max Craig and PJ Criscione dished out single scores, while Adam Grammer had two assists.

St. John’s Prep 7, St. John’s Shrewsbury 1: Brooks Clark led the scoring with two goals, while Dean Ebbert and Sean Berube netted a goal and an assist for the Eagles (14-1-2). Cody Merritt, Mike Lanza and Matt Chilton all added single goals during the senior event. Center back Carter Ocko along with Matt Brady played well on defense.

St. Mary’s 1, Matignon 0: Senior Dan Wayland scored 22 minutes into the first half to give the Spartans the advantage and ultimately the win. Salem native Helio Neto posted his eighth shutout of the year as St. Mary’s finishes at 12-3-3.


Endicott 4, Nichols 3: Emily Sawchuck finished with a goal and an assist to lead the Gulls over CCC opponent Nichols. For the fourth time under coach Jodi Cipolla, Endicott will head into the tournament with the top seed (13-4 overall, 9-1 CCC). Kathryn Walker, Cassie DeSimone and Hannah Thornberg also had goals for Endicott.

Western New England 4, Gordon 2: In their final regular season game, the Scots scored first only to be silenced by four-second half goals from Western New England. Brittany Hawkins and Leah LaPalombara scored in the loss for Gordon (6-13).

Westfield State 5, Salem State 4: Despite a late second half push, the Vikings (9-8) dropped their final regular season game. Courtney Lynch scored two goals, while Kathleen Clark and Kadye McCarthy each recorded single scores for Salem State.


Gordon 1, Endicott 0: Andrew Vandervoort lifted the Scots past Endicott with the only goal of the Commonwealth Coast Conference quarterfinal matchup. The Gulls outshot Gordon 17-13, but were edged out of tournament play in the loss.

Fitchburg State 2, Salem State 1: Matt Figueiredo netted the Vikings only goal of the game in the first half off a pass from Carlos Escobar. Top-seeded Salem State finished up the regular season at 10-6-2 and will host Bridgewater State later this week.


Salem State 2, Fitchburg State 1: Sophomore Amy Griffith scored the game winning goal at the 81:29 mark. Kelly Birchmore scored first for the Vikings (9-5-2), while Sara Previte and Alysha Brunelle recorded assists.

Gordon 3, Western New England 1: Senior forward Caitlin Nedde recorded a hat trick in Saturday’s CCC quarterfinal game. The win improves the Scots to 16-2 overall on the season and advances them to the CCC Semifinals scheduled for tomorrow afternoon.

Endicott wins on PKs: Senior Chelsea Garlock scored on the fifth penalty kick for the Gulls, who shot first in the best-of-five shootout over sixth seeded Wentworth. Sophomore goalkeeper Katie Donnelly made four saves during the game and two diving saves in the shootout to keep the Gulls in the tournament hunt.


Gordon splits: The Scots (16-14) finished out the regular season with a 3-0 loss to Roger Williams in the opening game of the tri-match followed by a 3-0 win against Southern Maine. Senior captain Keri Hustus recorded 11 digs, Shaylyn Roach and Lauren Kranyak each posted five kills. Shannon Peterson paced Gordon in the second game with 12 digs.

Salem State 3, Newbury 2: The Vikings concluded their regular season at 5-16 and recognized their three seniors during Saturday’s win, Angelica Gonzalez, Kenia McKeon and Brittany Roscoe. Roscoe led the team with 14 kills and 13 digs, while junior Jazmin Santos had 13 kills and 11 digs.

Endicott 3, Western New England 2: The Gulls (12-19) managed to pull off a 15-13 fifth set win to get the victory over the Golden Bears (25-23, 21-25, 25-21, 20-25, 15-13). Junior outside hitter Callie Dolan had 18 kills, while freshman setter Alleigh VandeMerkt dished out 41 assists.


CCC Championships: The Gordon men’s team finished the 8K course third out of six teams. Andrew Swanson was the team’s top finisher on the day in 12th (28:20) out of 71 runners, followed closely by Wes Nelson in 13th (28:30). Andrew Kwiatkowski (16th, 28:54) and Kory Powers (17th, 28:56) also had strong finishes for Gordon.



Gordon places 4th: The Scots finished in 4th place out of eight Commonwealth Coast Conference teams. Gordon freshman Leanna Beedle was the top runner for Gordon, coming in 10th with a time of 24:08. Mary Beth Gray also had a standout day for the Scots with a 14th place finish (24:31), while teammates Thais Ziegenhals (21st, 24:57) and Katie Hakanson-Stacy (26th, 25:05) also ran strong.
