Generals' victory could be sign of things to come

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Hamilton-Wenham cross country head coach Steve Sawyer isn't going to throw any parties, but the Generals' victory in the Division 2 McIntyre Bay State Invitational this weekend has good implications of what is to come.

Hamilton-Wenham placed three runners in the top 10, good for 65 points.

"It was a big, big win for the girls," Sawyer said. "It was a big-time performance at this time of the year. It was an indication that we have a good team and will have a very good year."

The Lanois sisters, who have been finishing in the front of the pack all year, did it again. Emily Lanois finished second with a time of 18:48 which was the second fastest time of all the runners that day (Division 1 and 2). Her sister, Alison Lanois finished eighth with a time of 19:52. Rounding out the top 10 and following Alison was Cyrena Shiland with a time of 19:59.

Beverly eighth at Bay States

The Beverly High girls track team finished eighth overall in Division 1 at the Bay State Invitationals. Kelly O'Connor finished fourth overall with a time of 19:10 and Millie Chapman finished 10th with a time of 19:50.

Danvers freshman finishes first

Haley Dyer finished in first place in the Division 2 freshman race at the McIntyre Bay State Invitational with a time of 12:15. Rachel Kaczynski finished fourth with a time of 12:42 out of 124 runners.

Masco's D'Agostino takes top spot

Abbey D'Agostino, with a time of 18:59, finished first at the Bay State Invitational's 3.1 mile course in Division 1. D'Agostino beat about 285 other runners in the meet.

Swampscott second at Thetford (Vt.) Invitational

Lindsay Walsh finished fourth out of 535 runners to lead Swampscott to a second-place finish at the Thetford Invitational.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Swampscott 17th at Thetford (Vt.) Invitational

Sam Rakoc was ninth for Swampscott to lead the Big Blue to a strong finish at the Thetford (Vt.) Invitational.

Danvers freshman receives medal

Falcon freshman Brian Hebert came in 23rd in the Division 2 McIntyre Bay State Invitational freshman race with a time of 11:42.

FIELD HOCKEY

Andover 2, Bishop Fenwick 1

Fenwick scored first but could not hold off Andover, which scored two in the first half. Maggie Gore tallied the only goal for the Crusaders (6-2) assisted by Kara Charochak. Jillian Cardin played well defensively.

BOYS SOCCER

St. Johns Prep 2, Lowell 1

The Prep had a two-goal lead at the half and stifled the Lowell offense to hold on. Zach Hathaway and Kelley Johnson were the goal scorers while Foti Andrea had the lone assist.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Endicott 27, Nichols 20

Drew Cusato ran for 93 yards and two scores as Endicott spoiled Nichols' homecoming weekend. The Gulls improved to 2-3.

MEN'S SOCCER

Salem State 3, MCLA 2

All Viking goals were unassisted and were scored in the first half. Willer Nogueira and Andrew Angus both scored in the contest.

Western New England 2, Gordon 1

Junior midfielder Joel Spruane scored an unassisted goal for the Fighting Scots (4-4), but it wasn't enough on Saturday.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Salem State 2, MCLA 1

In a come-from-behind victory sophomore Taylor Orlando and junior Erin O'Brien scored late in the second half.

Gordon 1, Western New England 0

Junior goalie Abby Ytzen stopped four shots for her third shutout and Christin Peters scored on a feed from Erin Strom in the second half as the Scots moved to 3-5-1.

Endicott 3, Salve Regina 0

Kayla Corbett, Caitlin Flynn and Kellie Lajoie each scored first-half goals as the Gulls rolled.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL

Salem State places second in SSC Tourney

The Lady Vikings defeated Pine Manor College 3-2 and University of Maine-Machias 3-0 to place second behind UMass Boston as the host school of their tournament.

FIELD HOCKEY

UMass Dartmouth 2, Salem State 1

Stephanie Kinchia scored three minutes into overtime for the Corsairs victory. April Rossetti scored Salem State's only goal.

Endicott 3, New England College 0

Samantha Bourgeois, Anna Giannoni and Joanne Reid each scored goals to help Endicott improve to 10-2.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

UMass Boston 6, Salem State 3

UMass Boston won four of six singles matches and two of three doubles matches to drop the Lady Vikings to 2-5.

Endicott 6, Salve Regina 3

Kate Coffi, Nicole Breting, and Lori Wardner won at the top three singles spots to lead the Gulls (12-0) to victory.
