Tuesday's area roundup: Defense, timely scoring keep Salem girls lacrosse unbeaten in NEC


Salem 13, Gloucester 8: Senior goaltender Danielle Pynn stopped a dozen shots and had some outstanding defense in front of her from senior captain Courtney Shearstone and juniors Brenna Burke and Shayna Hall as the Witches stayed unbeaten in the Northeastern Conference (4-0) and improved to 5-2 overall.

Junior captain Lydia Grasberger had a monster game offensively with five goals. So did Emily Coelho, who had four goals; Alexa Gilbert, who tallied twice and contributed four assists; and Kristina Leblanc, who had two goals and a like number of assists.

Marblehead 18, Peabody 7: Meggie Collins scored four goals and dished out six assists to power the Magicians (10-1). Pamela Gregory added four goals and one assist and Emily Freedland contributed three goals and two assists. Sydney Cayen (3 goals, 1 assist) and Cassie Rodgers (2-2) also had big offensive games while senior goalie Allie Forman made 11 saves.

Peabody junior Joanna Ambelliotis made 10 saves in her first varsity start. Christine Feudo and Madison Doherty played well on defense for the Tanners (5-3) and Megan Poverman had a goal, an assist and four draw controls.

Masconomet 10, Hamilton-Wenham 8: Amy Arnold scored four times and Kathleen Gillespie had two goals and three assists as the Chieftains (7-3) prevailed. Zoe Cennami had two goals and an assist and Mary Lee Hutchinson caused an important turnover for Masco. Emily Gaucher had four goals and one assist for H-W (7-2) while Catherine Ecker scored twice and goalie Morgan Kimball made 15 saves.


Waring 10, Landmark 4: Senior Teddy Lyman had four goals and four assists to lead Waring, which avenged an early season loss to Landmark. Goalie Ben Stromback, who is from Finland, overcame an injury to make 13 saves in the winning effort, while Jack Stanton had two goals and two assists and Cam McGuiness scored twice and won 72 percent of his faceoffs.

Salem 17, Revere 7: Chad Coelho had five goals and an assist while Matt Wilson was great in the faceoff-X in addition to three goals and an assist. Pete Slattery added two goals and two assists and Billy Muse and Todd Dunlop each scored twice for Salem (8-4). Long poles J.P Kapnis and Kyle Coleman also played well in the win.
