Nine outstanding senior cross country and track and field stars have been nominated for the fifth annual Gabriel Pacione Cape Ann League Scholarship, honoring the memory of the former Hamilton-Wenham superstar runner.
Three locals are among those who have been nominated: Sarah Duffy of Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School; Sarah Keiran of Ipswich High School; and Jake Moorman of Masconomet Regional High School.
Duffy, who will take her talents to Merrimack College, has been a member of the cross country, indoor and outdoor track teams at Hamilton-Wenham for all 12 seasons of her high school career. A member of four straight unbeaten cross country teams and two-time indoor track MVP, this Salem News all-star was also a top seven runner for the Generals’ winning team at the Nike Regional Cross Country Championships in New York.
Keiran, the Ipswich representative for The Salem News Student-Athlete Award, will run at the University of New Hampshire. A member of the National Honor Society, she is the two-time CAL Cross Country Runner of the Year and the mile champion both indoors and outdoors within the league. A team captain in all three seasons, Keiran is a four-time cross country MVP for the Tigers and has been a Salem News all-star seven times.
Moorman, who will continue his career at UMass Amherst, is a 10-time winner of Masconomet’s Scholar-Athlete Award and a member of the National Honor Society as well. A two-time CAL All-Leaguer in cross country, he is a team captain for all three sports and an extremely versatile performer who runs the 800, 1000, mile, two-mile and relays equally well.
Other CAL track and field standouts who have been nominated include Lexi Buonfiglio of Lynnfield High School; Jennifer Crawford of North Reading High School; Renee Vigneault of Amesbury High School; Joseph Santo of Newburyport High School; Marissa Porter of Pentucket Regional High School; and Elise Mitchell of Triton Regional High School.
