---- — Nine outstanding senior cross country and track and field stars have been nominated for the fifth annual Gabriel Pacione Cape Ann League Scholarship, honoring the memory of the former Hamilton-Wenham superstar runner.
Three locals are among those who have been nominated: Sarah Duffy of Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School; Sarah Keiran of Ipswich High School; and Jake Moorman of Masconomet Regional High School.
Duffy, who will take her talents to Merrimack College, has been a member of the cross country, indoor and outdoor track teams at Hamilton-Wenham for all 12 seasons of her high school career. A member of four straight unbeaten cross country teams and two-time indoor track MVP, this Salem News all-star was also a top seven runner for the Generals’ winning team at the Nike Regional Cross Country Championships in New York.
Keiran, the Ipswich representative for The Salem News Student-Athlete Award, will run at the University of New Hampshire. A member of the National Honor Society, she is the two-time CAL Cross Country Runner of the Year and the mile champion both indoors and outdoors within the league. A team captain in all three seasons, Keiran is a four-time cross country MVP for the Tigers and has been a Salem News all-star seven times.
Moorman, who will continue his career at UMass Amherst, is a 10-time winner of Masconomet’s Scholar-Athlete Award and a member of the National Honor Society as well. A two-time CAL All-Leaguer in cross country, he is a team captain for all three sports and an extremely versatile performer who runs the 800, 1000, mile, two-mile and relays equally well.
Other CAL track and field standouts who have been nominated include Lexi Buonfiglio of Lynnfield High School; Jennifer Crawford of North Reading High School; Renee Vigneault of Amesbury High School; Joseph Santo of Newburyport High School; Marissa Porter of Pentucket Regional High School; and Elise Mitchell of Triton Regional High School.
These athletes were nominated by their coaches as being accomplished student-athletes who lead by example and whose performances and sportsmanship encourage and inspire others. Good sportsmanship and employing the power of teamwork in competition were also critical factors in choosing these student-athletes.
The Gabriel Pacione Scholarship will be awarded to the winning student-athlete this Saturday at the Cape Ann League Outdoor Track and Field Championships at North Reading High School. Previous winners include Samantha Brown of Ipswich (2012) and Alison Lanois (2011), Jackson MacDonald (2010) and Emily Lanois (2009), all from Hamilton-Wenham Regional.
