Tuesday's area roundup: Marblehead outlasts M-E in overtime, qualifies for states

Marblehead 56, Manchester Essex 48 (OT): The state-tournament bound Magicians (10-9) earned a place in their own Sheridan Tournament final with a home victory. Marblehead faces Concord-Carlisle tonight at 8 p.m. Will Millett earned a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds as Marblehead forced overtime after trailing by ten at the half. Angel Perez pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds to go along with his four points while senior Matt Millett dropped in a dozen points. Spencer Craig also contributed 11.“Manchester Essex was solid.We had to grind it out. There was no strategy invovled, we just had to do it one possession at a time,” Marblehead coach Mike Giardi said of his team’s comeback.

Danvers 64, Rockland 42: Devon Allen (nine points, seven assists) and Kieran Beck (four points, six rebounds, five assists) played outstanding defense to help the Falcons pull away in the second quarter and wrap up the regular season at 17-2. Rashad Francois hit five 3-pointers and scoread team high 17 points while Devan Harris scored 16 points.Mark McCarthy added 11 points and three assists and Peter Merry had six points, six rebounds and 10 blocked shots.


Marblehead 60, Mystic Valley 39: The host Magicians (11-8) won to advance to the finals of the Sheridan Tournament, being played today against Winchester (4 p.m.).


Gloucester 6, Salem 1: Matt Jalbert’s first period goal staked Salem (9-8-3) to the lead, but the host Fishermen scored four times in the second, including twice in the final minute of the middle stanza, to seize control. Netminder Brett Harring made 26 saves for the Witches and Mike Gillis and Sam Petri earned assists on Jalbert’s goal.

Marshfield 7, Peabody 1: Freshman Nick Merryman scored his first varsity goal late in the third to get the Tanners (5-15-2) on the scoreboard in their last game of the 2013-14 season. Junior Bobby Caproni earned an assist on the goal while freshman netminder Aaron McDonnell stopped 15 of 18 shots and sophomore Freddy Robitaille stopped six of seven in the third.


Beverly 4, Auburn 0: Winger Kristen McCarthy had a pair of goals and Izzy Straw and Nicole Woods also scored as the Panthers (14-2-2) advanced to the championship game of the Cougar Classic’s red division.

Marblehead 11, Matignon 3: The Lady Headers (7-10-3) rolled on the road and snapped a six game winless streak in the process. Lauren Perry, Alanna Burke, Amanda Monahan and Faithe Shatford all scored their first varsity goals for Marblehead while captain Brittany Smith had a hat trick and added two assists. Defenseman Caroline Highes had a goal and two assists while Perry, Shatford, Olivia Fusgeni, Hadley Woodfin and Emmarose Winder each had a goal and one assist. In all, 14 different skaters had points for Marblehead.


Roger Williams 66, Gordon 42: The host Hawks earned win No. 20 on the season by limiting Gordon (5-19) to 33 percent shooting for the game. Lauren Kranyak scored a team-best 10 points for Gordon while Olivia Vetere grabbed 10 rebounds. Mariel Barner chipped in nine points.


Gordon 70, Roger Williams 59: Alex Carnes scored 20 points off the bench to spark the Fighting Scots (14-9) to a second half comeback. Hans Miersma recorded yet another double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds while Jason Dempsey also chipped in 10 points.
