Danvers 3, North Andover 1: Sean Lundergan scored the game-winning goal midway through the third period and senior captain Matt Flynn sealed the game with an empty netter as the Falcons (9-9-1) scored a huge two points by defeating the Scarlet Knights at the Newburyport Bank Classic.
Now, a win or a tie against Saugus in Friday’s Fournier Division championship game back at Newburyport (7 p.m.) will get Danvers into the Division 2 North state tournament.
“Overall, we executed our game plan well,” said head coach Kevin Brown. “The kids played hard; they were committed and focused on getting the job done.
“We like that (Graf) Rink in Newburyport; it suits our style of play. We’re able to do the things we preach in practice.”
Flynn, who leads the Falcons with nine goals, had two tallies yesterday, including one in the first period. Fellow captain Kevin Hodgkins assisted on both of his goals while freshman Robert Tibbetts and defensemen Erik D’Orlando and Alec Littlefield also had helpers. Alex Taylor was solid in goal, making 13 saves.
WEYMOUTH 2, BEVERLY 0: The Panthers (18-1-1) fell for the first time all season in their regular season finale despite 26 saves from goalie Tim Birarelli and some strong play from forward Kevin Lally. “We’ll learn from this and go from there,” said Beverly head coach Bob Gilligan. “It’s time to put this behind us and get ready for the (Division 2 North) state tournament.”
ST. JOHN’S PREP 3, WINCHESTER 1: Teddy McNamara scored a pair of goals and defenseman Ean Mendeszoon also blasted one home as the Eagles (8-9-2) saved their season with a victory; they now can clinch a playoff spot with a win over Wakefield tomorrow. Freshman Zach Laramie turned aside several big chances by the Sachems in the third period to earn the victory.
