Four different players scored goals as the Masconomet Regional hockey team claimed at least a share of the Cape Ann League hockey title last night with a 4-1 victory over host Saugus at the Kasabuski Arena.
Seniors Tommy Cashin (his 3rd), Jake Esposito (his 8th) and Nick Aleckna (his 5th) scored goals to give the Chieftains a 3-0 lead after one period of play. Defenseman Tyler Costello added an insurance marker with less than nine minutes remaining.
“It was really good to earn at least a share of the league title,” said head coach Andrew Jackson, whose team finished league play at 10-2-2 (14-4-2 overall) as it gets ready for tomorrow’s Division 2 North playoff seedings to be released. “North Reading can tie for the title with a win today (over Lynnfield), but if they tie or lose it’s ours alone.”
Jeff Panella, Joe Emma and Joe Griffin each finished with two assists in the win while Mitch Nekoroski was sharp in making 23 saves between the pipes. Ryan Duval and Brendan Crowther both had strong games for the Chieftains as well.
Beverly 6, Notre Dame Academy 3: The Panthers finished the regular season at 17-2-2 after capturing the title game at the Cougar Classic.
