He became the first two-time champ for St. John’s since Ryan Malo in 2007.
Butterbrodt and Jared Costa make it 26 state champions for St. John’s Prep, 24 under Manny Costa.
Butterbrodt increased his record to 55-0 this year, and he’ll try to win back-to-back All-State titles next week.
“He’s been dominant all year. He worked hard in the offseason and he placed at nationals, so he’s nationally ranked,” Costa said. “He goes to work when he goes on the mat. He likes to build points, he’s a very methodical wrestler.”
In addition to Butterbrodt and Jared and Hunter Costa, Fred Colberg, Michael Dik and Ben Kincaid will also be advancing to All-States. Colberg placed fifth at 152 pounds while Dik (120 pounds) and Kincaid (160) each placed sixth.
As a team, St. John’s finished second behind Springfield Central.
Danvers places sixth in Div. 3: Chris Behen (138 pounds) and Sam Anderson (152) each finished second to highlight the Falcons’ weekend at the Division 3 state championship. Michael Neff (113) took third for Danvers and Chris Davis added a fifth at 120 pounds.
Beverly’s Wilbur takes second: Tom Wilbur won three matches at 170 pounds but lost to North Andover’s Brad Drover in the final. Wilbur will advance to the All-States.
Pingree excels at EILs: Senior Erin Cunninghan set a new Pingree record in the 50 free with a time of 25.12 to held the Highlanders finish third at the EIL Championships at Wellesley on Saturday. The boys were fourth and Pingree came away with 14 total best times.Cunningham was also second in the 100 back (1:02.67) while Allie Attarian was third in the 100 breast (1:17.69) and those two teams with June Kiely and Alexa Harrison for third in the 200 medley relay. Senior Solina Powell was fourth in the 100 breast (1:23.19), Sam Consitt was fourth in the boys 50 free (25.98) and Kiely was fifth in both the 200-IM and 100 free.
