Beverly, Masconomet and Danvers gymnasts compete at North Sectionals

HUDSON — The Beverly High gymnastics team took in every last bit of Saturday’s North Sectional meet at Hudson High School.

In their final team meet of the season, the Panthers finished with a score of 140.150, good for sixth place. It wasn’t, however, the ending they were hoping for after advancing to states the past three years.

Instead, Andover (146.100), Newton South (144.475), Westford Academy (141.675) and North Andover (141.475) were the four squads that will take part in this Saturday’s state meet at at Shrewsbury High.

“The girls are pretty upset about not making it to states,” said Beverly head coach Lauryn Ginsburg. “I told them as long as you went out there and tried 100 percent.

“It’s a little different not making states this year. Coming in as the sixth seed, we really thought we had a shot at bumping up two spots if we hit all of our routines. Obviously we didn’t have perfect meet, and the other competition was really great. It usually comes down to who sticks on beam.”

Masconomet, which came into sectionals seeded 10th, placed ninth with an overall score of 135.425. Danvers was right behind the Chieftains, finishing 10th with a 131.900.

At the end of the first two rotations, Beverly put together a 69.55 after bars and beam. The Panthers’ best scoring event was on vault with a 35.925. Junior Heather Gomes led the way with a 9.475 and freshman Kara MacGilvray scored a 9.05.

“Bars and vault were the highlight of the meet for us,” noted Ginsburg. “We probably had our best meet of the season on those two events. We were expecting to get a little lower on bars because they judge harder; the fact that we got some of our highest scores of the season, like Heather’s 9.6 and Hannah Rennie (9.1), that was part was exciting for us.”
