Tuesday's area sports roundup: Beverly girls win State Pentathlon

GIRLS TRACK

The Beverly girls track team scored a combined 8145 to capture first place out of 100 teams across the state at yesterday’s Pentathlon at Reggie Lewis Center. Senior Kristen O’Connor finished third overall, Kendall Davy was sixth and Kelly Pierce was the other member of the trio of girls selected to represent the Panthers.

“We knew we had a pretty good team,” said head coach Dave Jellerson. “The girls just performed exceptionally well on the five different events.”

O’Connor, Davy and Pierce competed in the high hurdles, high jump, long jump, shot put and the 800 meter.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Bishop Fenwick 73, Mystic Valley 61: The Crusaders trailed at the half, but managed to pull away in the second. Fenwick, which is seeded 10th in the Division 4 North bracket, will face off against No. 2 seeded Hamilton-Wenham on Friday. Fenwick senior Matt Costello scored 23 points and nine rebounds to lead the Crusaders. Dom Luoni added 18 points, Travis Maxner scored 11 and pulled down seven rebounds, and Jhon Olivera hit some big second-half shots off the bench for the Crusaders.

Salem Academy 53, Pioneer Charter 43: Itua Egha (18 points, eight rebounds) and Sammy Benoit (19 points, five rebounds, five assists) led the way for the Navigators (2-13).

Senior captain Chad Nelson scored 11 of his game-high 25 points in the fourth quarter and finished with 14 rebounds. Joey Ragusa added a dozen points in the victory. Swampscott (5-13) will play Arlington Catholic at Woburn on Saturday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Salem Academy 19, Pioneer Charter 8: Nyona Dukes had eight points, three assists and three steals as the Navigators finish the season at 5-10 overall. Jessi Nguyen added six points and four rebounds in the win.

Newburyport 54, Marblehead 51: The Magicians fought hard, but came up short in double overtime. Senior McKenna Barrett had 12 points and seven rebounds, while junior Mia Bongiorno added 10 points and three steals. Freshmen Lindsay Walker (nine points, 12 rebounds) and Jenny Norcorss (eight points, three steals) also added to the scoring.
