In five seasons as Masconomet's goalie, beginning in eighth grade, Alex Jones has seen the ups and downs of high school hockey.

As a senior this past winter, she led the Chieftains to new heights.

The MVP of the GEMIHL, Jones tied her own Masco program record by winning 14 games and leading the Chieftains back to the state tournament. She led the area with a goals against average of 1.25, six shutouts and a sterling .939 save percentage.

"Alex certainly dominated on the ice," said Masconomet coach Nicole Twomey. "She kept us in games and we competed at a much higher level because of her goaltending. She made the saves she needed to make and she pulled some out of thin air."

The two-time Salem News all-star made 37 saves in a 1-1 tie with then-unbeaten Beverly, and wound up with 403 saves on the season. She was steady and dependable, playing every minute of every game for the fifth straight season, and allowing two goals or fewer in 18 of her 21 starts.

Moreover, the Topsfield native excelled in her role as captain, helping bring together a team with players from six school districts.

"Hands down, she was a leader," said Twomey. "She's a very mature kid that gave every player, individually, what they needed in terms of leadership. Alex is a great all-around kid and she was definitely the backbone, and the heart, of our team."

Jones graduates with Masconomet program records of 44 career wins and 21 career shutouts. She made 2,093 saves of the course of 102 games played and upwards of 4,500 minutes. She plans to study sports medicine at Norwich University, where she hopes to try out for the women's hockey team.
