Marblehead 54, Saugus 28: Senior captains Emily Freedland (16 points, 5 steals, 4 assists) and McKenna Barrett (11 points) made sure that new Magicians’ head coach Wayne Hanscom’s debut on the bench would be a memorable one, pulling away from Saugus in their season opener. Point guard Mia Bongiorno (6 points, 5 assists), Sara Snedecki (6 points and some great defense), Lindsay Walker (6 points) and junior forward Grace McGurrin (8 rebounds) also had strong games for Marblehead.
Bishop Fenwick 47, Cardinal Spellman 33: The Crusaders (1-0) only led by one at halftime but outscored Spellman 16-5 in the third quarter to pull away from the hosts. Colleen Corcoran had a team-high 12 points and 12 rebounds while Kate Lipka scored 10 and grabbed five boards. Bridget Corcoran had six points and five rebounds and Lexi Rose added nine points and a pair of steals.
Beverly 73, Winthrop 13: Senior Kristen O’Connor won both the 300 (45.2) and the high jump (4-10) to help spark the Panthers (1-0) in their indoor opener. O’Connor ran the winning 4x400 relay along with Keely Higgins, Abbey Walsh and Caitlin Harty, who added a victory in the 600 (1:44.1). Nicole Demars won the mile for Beverly in 5:26.
Marblehead 80, Lynn English 6: The Magicians won all nine events to roll in the season opener. Olivia Vener won the high hurdles (7.7), Alyssa Nye took the dash (6.6) and Monica Thorne won the 300 (46.5) to help get Marblehead going. Faith Freeucci (shot put), Lily Cummings (high jump), Paige Ferrucci (mile) and Jayana Randall (2-mile) also won.
Peabody 72, Danvers 14: Katie Gallo keyed a sweep of the shot put that helped the Tanners (1-0) handle Danvers in the opener. Toni Pagliuca (2-mile), Samantha Allen (mile), Lauren Barrett (1000), Sarah Godschall (600), Cynthia Aroke (300), Sam Cummings (dash) and Georgia Bena (high jump) also won events for Peabody. Erin St. Pierre won the hurdles for Danvers.
Beverly 77, Winthrop 8: The Panthers (1-0) won every event and Matt Madden led the way by taking both the dash and the shot put. Serge Jolicoeur won the high jump (5-6) while Campbell Wood won the 2-mile, Brian McPherson wont he 1000, Anthony Nolasco took the hurdles, Jordy Rawding won the 300, Bryan Flaherty won the 600 and Anthony Morrissey prevailed in the mile.
