Marblehead 64, Lynn English 22: Conrad Rousseau won the hurdles in 7.1, Jaason Lopez took the dash in 6.1 and Jakob Wikar won the 300 in 44.5 to get the Magicians on track in their season opener. Also winning events were Mitch Norcross (high jump), Derek Dumais (shot put), Mike Weidenbruch (1000), Jared Kokinos (mile) and A.J. Ernst (2-mile).
Peabody 66, Danvers 20: Richie Fournier won the 2-mile and Peabody took first and second in all three distance events to pull away from Danvers. Also winning for the Tanners were Drew Fossa (mile), Cody Picardy (1000), Alex Grecco (600), David Tremonte (300), Christian Cedullo (dash) and Anthony Christo (shot put). Zach Persson (hurdles) and Connor Rollins (high jump) won events for Danvers.
Beverly 49, Danvers 44: Four double-winners helped the Panthers (1-0) take the season opener. Rachel Grant won the 200 free and 100 fly, Andrea Higgins won the 200 IM and 500 free, Astrid Swensen won the 100 free and 100 breaststroke and Sarah Welch grabbed the 100 back.
Swampscott 93, Peabody 90: The Big Blue won the meet on the last event, though Peabody had did have eight event winners. Maria Strakosha won the 200 free and the 100 fly, Alex Strakosha took the 500 free and the 200-IM and Meghan Lurvey took the 100 back and swam a leg of the 200 free relay. Paige Hayward was first in diving.
For Swampscott, Jess Bentz won the 50 free in a personal best time of 30.52. The 400 freestyle relay team of Tessa Diaz, Emily Guo, Hannah Schultz and Kasey Kennedy were also victorious (4:18), and captain T.J. Delano had PB time in the 200 free (2:31). Rachel Rookin also had a terrific race for the Big Blue in the 50 freestyle.
WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Salem State 57, Plymouth State 54: Rachael Carter hit two of her 16 free throws with 55 seconds left to put Salem State (4-5) ahead for good. Carter had a team-high 24 points for the Vikings and also grabbed 14 rebounds, including seven on the offensive end. Ashley White and Ginny Fleming each scored seven points for Salem.
MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Salem State 80, Plymouth State 75 (OT): Nick Grassa had 24 points and nailed six three-pointers as the Vikings (5-4) won in the extra session. Hamed Akanni added 21 for Salem State, which didn’t score in the final 3:00 of regulation to allow PSU to tie it. The Vikes outscores the hosts 16-9 in OT to rebound, however.
