Friday's area roundup: Defense helps Hamilton-Wenham girls start with win


The Hamilton-Wenham girls basketball team showed no rust defensively in last night’s season opening, 45-22 win over Triton.

The Generals allowed no first half field goals while giving up just 9 points over the first two quarters.

“I thought the defense played reall well. There was a little adjustment with the new rules but we did a good job adjusting in the second half,” said H-W (1-0) skipper Jon DeMarco. “As a team we caused 35 turnovers and any night you can do that you have a good chance of winning.”

In all, 11 different girls saw significant time on the court last night. Catherine Ecker finished with 15 points, 13 rebounds and two blocks while Samantha Charette added 10 points, 10 boards, five steals and two blocks. Sue Rose didn’t score but did have eight assists and eight steals running the point for the Generals.


Hamilton-Wenham 55, Triton 41: Henry Eagar had a monster night for the Generals (1-0) pouring in a game-high 32 points to go with 10 rebounds.

Greater Lawrence 56, NST/EA 36: The Hawks (0-1) grabbed a lot of rebounds including 11 from both Riley Anderson (12 points) and Yordany Sanchez (seven points) but NST/EA couldn’t overcome a dreadul shooting performance.

Amesbury 74, Ipswich 41: Chris Remy (10 points) and Zack Eliopoulos (12 points) led Ipswich (0-1) in scoring while Ben Rice grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds.


sWAMSPCOTT 52, rEVERE 34: Matt Mahoney won the 2-mile (10:28) and Jack Denney took the mile (5:22) as the Big Blue came out on top. Bennett Smith won the 1000 for Swampscott, Noah Conti took the 600 (1:29), Marco Scibelli won the 300 (39.6), Colman Donovan won the hurdles and Justin Chasse came in first in the shot put with a heave of 44-feet-3-inches.


Swampscott 47, Revere 36: The Big Blue prevailed in their first meet of the 2013-14 indoor season.


St. Georges 5, Pingree 3: In a reversal of their come from behind win Wednesday night, Pingree lost a 3-1 lead in the third period of a setback last night.
