Beverly gymnastics tops Masconomet, stays undefeated

BEVERLY — The Beverly girls gymnastics team can breathe a sigh of relief after topping previously undefeated Masconomet, 140.35-136.15 last night.

The meet had been circled on the Panthers’ schedule since the season began and the same can be said for the Chieftains.

Beverly managed to remain perfect on the year and earned its 36th consecutive league meet, dating back to the 2011 season.

“We’re winding down the season with our two toughest competitions of the season,” said Beverly head coach Lauryn Ginsburg, whose team improved to 8-0. “We had Danvers last Saturday and now Masco (6-1), so we really tried to prepare and go big. We cleaned up a lot of routines and I think the girls showed what we’ve been specifically working on in practice the past week or two.

“We still haven’t hit a perfect meet, but we’ve been making some big improvements and I’m really happy with how the girls did this past week.”

A win against Winthrop on Tuesday will give the Panthers another Northeastern Conference/Cape Ann League title and a perfect season for the fourth year in a row.

Beverly led the Chieftains 70.15-66.6 after two rotations (vault and bars) and continued to dominate in the second half of the meet.

Junior Heather Gomes placed first in the all-around for the Panthers. Gomes finished with a 37.30 and took first on vault (9.4), bars (9.05), beam (9.5) and floor (9.35). Fellow teammate Hannah Rennie also has a standout meet for Beverly. Rennie earned a 9.0 on beam and placed third in the all-around (35.45).

Freshman Kara MacGilvray also put up some big scores for Beverly — 9.0 on vault, 8.5 on bars and an 8.75 on beam. Sophomore Kaitlyn O’Connor added to the win with an 8.55 on vault. Kate Jackimowicz had one of the top Beverly scores on the floor exercise with an 8.5.
