With four games left in the regular season, the Hamilton-Wenham boys basketball team clinched at least a share of the Cape Ann League Large title with last night’s 59-54 win over Newburyport.
It’s the Generals’ fourth CAL title in five years and fifth in seven. Considering the fact that H-W (13-2) is just getting healthy, coach Doug Hoak’s boys could be hitting their stride at just the right time.
Senior Nick Loeper, junior Nikos Lara and freshman Marcus Zegarowski all missed significant time but now all three are back and the Generals are rolling. Zegarowski scored 15 points last night.
“We put three new pieces in the puzzle so we went through an adjustment period playing with different personnel and still building that chemistry on the floor,” explained Hoak. “We were and might still be in a little bit of a transition. But potentially with everyone back, we should get better and better each game.”
Jimmy Campbell (10 points), Henry Eagar (11 points) and Max Zegarowski (12 points) were the other double-digit scorers for the Generals last night with Max Zegarowski getting all of his points from downtown.
Rockport 68, Ipswich 64: Matt Jaeger hit four three-pointers as he and Jake Long scored 16 points each for Ipswich (1-15).
St. John’s Prep 61, Xaverian 43: The Eagles improved to 12-3 thanks to 15 points from Ben Judson and 14 points from Max Butterbrodt.
Masco 51, Pentucket 43: Jake Rudolph (14 points) and Kevin Martin (13 points) helped Masco bump its season mark to 8-6.
Lynn English 85, Peabody 70: The Tanners (7-9) saw their winning streak halted by first-place English, which took advantage of second chance points and a big edge on the glass. Jared McCarron scored 18 points for Peabody with four rebounds and four steals and Bobby Sullivan had 10 points and five boards. Matt Correale chipped in 15 points and freshman Matt D’Amato added 13.
