Meghan Duggan and her USA Hockey teammates will start their quest for gold in Sochi this morning against Finland. The game takes place at 3 a.m. local time. There is good news for local supporters of the captain from Danvers that don’t keep night owl hours, however, as the NBC Sports Network will rebroadcast the game at 6 p.m. tonight.
The Finns defeated the US Women’s National team at the Four Nations Cup last November with Noora Raty, arguably the best women’s goaltender in the world, making 58 saves in a 3-1 decision. The Americans had previously won the 2013 IIHF World Championship and have never lost to Finland in Olympic competition.
Duggan, USA’s team captain, is playing in her second Olympics after winning a silver medal in the 2010 games in Vancouver. The American women are looking to win gold for the first time since the first Olympic women’s hockey competition in 1998.
