Navigators open season with back-to-back wins

LYNN — Joe Gruntkosky of Peabody spun six innings to earn the win yesterday as the North Shore Navigators opened the weekend with back-to-back wins to kick off the 2013 Futures Collegiate Baseball League season.

The Navigators defeated the Torrington (Conn.) Titans yesterday at Fraser Field as shortstop Joe Love stole home in the second before Tim Hendricks’ sixth inning RBI single tied the game at 2-2. Tyler Zupcic scored the game-winning run on a subsequent throwing error, allowing Gruntkosky (zero earned runs) to get the win and Brandon Walsh to pick up the save.

In the Navigators’ season (and home) opener Saturday night, Hendricks drove home Calvin Graves in the bottom of the ninth for a walkoff victory. Derek Dubois pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn the victory for North Shore. Blaise Lezynski and Zupcic also had RBI hits for the winners while Hendricks finished with two RBI.
