Eleven different grapplers finished a perfect 4-0 on the day as the St. John’s Prep wrestling team closed out 2013 by besting four different opponents yesterday morning.
The Eagles toppled Whittier (59-12), Georgetown (35-8), Marblehead-Swampscott (42-0) and Pentucket (60-6) to improve to 14-1 on the young season.
Malcolm Mitchell (106 pounds), Michael Dik (120), Hunter Costa (126), Jared Costa (145), Fred Colberg (152), Ben Kincaid (160), Solomon White (170), Spencer Jenkins (182), Jim Messeder (195), Ian Butterbrodt (220) and Jay Carnevale (285) each won all four of their matches for St. John’s Prep.
Methuen 4, Peabody 2: A pair of goals from Reed Foster (his 3rd and 4th) in the third period gave the visiting Tanners (2-4) a 2-1 lead, but the hosts scored three times in the final 3:26 to deny Peabody head coach Mark Leonard his 200th career victory. Derek Demild had assists on both of Foster’s tallies while fellow captain Mike Vadala also picked up a helper.
Westford Academy 5, Masconomet 2: Scores off the sticks of Joe Emma and Tommy Cashin in the second period helped the Chieftains (3-2-1) slice a three-goal deficit to one, but the Division 1 Ghosts came back with two more of their own in the next 37 seconds to pull away for the win. Mike Dooley and Mike Castro earned assists on Cashin’s goal.
