Friday's area roundup: Gomes, Beverly get off to hot start

GYMNASTICS

Beverly 139.1, Peabody 119.75: Junior Heather Gomes wasn’t exactly perfect last night, but she was unbeatable as the Panthers rolled to their 29th straight win in the regular season. Gomes won all four events, taking first on vault (9.4), bars (8.75), beam (9.4), and floor (9.2) to help Beverly start the season right.

Freshman Kara MacGilvray took second in the all-around, placing second on vault (8.75) and bars (8.55) and third on beam (8.7). Hannah Rennie also stood out with seconds on floor (8.5) and beam (9.1) and a third on bars (8.3). Cassie Wahl and Kate Jackimowicz each tied for second on floor with Rennie.

“We had a pretty good start. There were definitely mistakes that we can improve on, but we were out this week with the snow and the holiday,” said Beverly coach Lauryn Ginsburg, whose team will battle Marblehead/Swampscott on Wednesday. “We had a week off and a couple of the girls are out with concussions. There is definitely room for improvement, but it was a solid start for the first meet.”

MEN’S COLLEGE HOCKEY

Salem State 3, Wentworth 1: Sophomore Chris Mastropietro recorded two goals for the Vikings (7-4-0) in the Salem State/Babson Tournament consolation game. Senior netminder Ryan Sutliffe stopped 30 shots while senior Eric Defelice scored the other goal.
