Monday's area roundup: Mitchell's shutout, Lally's big night help Beverly hockey earn postseason bid

Beverly 8, Wakefield 0: Kevin Lally had a career high four points with two goals and a like number of helpers while backup goaltender Bryce Mitchell stopped 13 shots for his first career shutout as Beverly (10-0-1) crushed Wakefield, 8-0, at the Talbot Rink in Gloucester last night to officially clinch a playoff berth.

Playing four lines throughout the contest, the Panthers got a goal and two assists each from winger Jack Straw and defenseman Nick Albano. Hunter Spencer and Ross Wahl both chipped in with one goal and one assist while junior center Ted Leathersich had two helpers. Captains Connor Irving and Jack Morency also had goals for the Orange-and-Black while Zach Cloutman and Chris McKenna both had strong games up front.


Salem 49, Revere 37: The Witches scored key wins in both the sprints and field events to improve to 2-1. Timmy Ryan (50 dash, 5.7 seconds) and Aaron Palmer (50 hurdles, 6.6) took home first place finishes, as did teammates Jon Crimble (high jump, 6-2), Riley Grondin (shot put, 41-5) and Jonathan Swasey (1000, 2:58.2). Salem, which placed no lower than second in any event, also won the mile relay in 4:11.

Danvers 44, Swampscott 42: The Falcons won their first meet as Connor Rollins won the high jump (6 feet) and was second in the 55 dash while Zach Persson took top honors in the 55 hurdles (8.5) and placed second in the high jump. Other Falcon first place finishers were John Thomas (55 dash, 6.7), Brandon Hyde (300, 40.7) and James Bailey (mile, 4:48.5). Needing to place second and third in the 2-mile to win the race prior to the mile relay, juniors Kevin Hebert (11:26) and Colin Marie (11:55) did so for the Falcons.

Matt Mahoney (2-mile, 10:17.3), Bennett Smith (1000, 2:50.7), Noah Conti (600, 1:31.6) and Justin Chasse (shot put, 45-9) had wins for Swampscott (2-2), which also prevailed in the mile relay (3:58.5).


Swampscott 49, Danvers 36: The Big Blue won eight of the nine events they participated in to improve to 3-1. Winners included Maria Travascio in the shot put (27-1 1/2), Mackenzie Faulkner in the 55 dash (7.7), Aisling Dennehy in the 300 (46.9), Taylor Gateman in the 600 (1:54.1), Lauren Sullivan in the 1000 (3:37.0), Sarah Kelley in the mile (5:35.2) and Michelle Laconte in the 2-mile (13:30.4). Swampscott also won the mile relay (4:53).

Danvers (0-5) got both of its wins from Erin St. Pierre, who finished first in the high jump (4-2) and 55 hurdles (9.2). Lauren Johnson took second place in the high jump with the same 4-2 as her teammate.

Revere 54, Salem 32: Alexa Gilbert took top honors in the high jump (4-8) for Salem while teammate Mikaela Dionne also finished first in the 2-mile (14:13.3), as did Desiree Martin in the 50 dash (6.4). Abby Meadowcroft (shot put), Alix Bryant (300), Sandy Pelkowsky (600) and Esther Hammidiou (1000) added second place finishes for Salem (0-2-1).


Beverly 53, Saugus 43: The Panthers won their third straight contest as 10 different players found their way onto the scoresheet. Freshman Natalie Mellinger led the way with 10 points while sophomore Melissa Lubas added eight points and six rebounds. Mikayla Woodward and Ashley Keaton both finished with seven points while Ashley Augulewicz had five and senior MaryCate Flaherty had four points and a team-high nine rebounds. Beverly’s (3-5) scoring balance offset a scorching hot shooting night for Saugus’ Norma Waggett, who finished with 37 points.


Marblehead 125.95, Peabody 117.5: Freshman Shelby McKie finished first in the all-around for Peabody with a 31.3. She won the beam (8.1) and tied for second on both vault (8.3) and floor (8.2). Sophomore Aubrey Irvine added a second place finish on bars (7.8) while junior Sam Kinnaly tied for second on vault (8.3) with McKie.
