Thursday's area roundup: St. John's volleyball opens postseason with win


St. John’s Prep 3, Greater Lowell 0: The Eagles took the first step on what they hope is a long postseason journey, topping Greater Lowell 25-13, 25-10, 25-14 in a Division 1 North first round match. Senior setter Sean Brennan set the pace with 31 assists and fellow senior Zach Burt had eight kills from the outside hitter spot.St. John’s (18-3) advances to the quarters, to be played at home next Tuesday against either Westdford Academy or Haverhill, who play tonight.



DANVERS 4, LYNN ENGLISH 1: The Falcons finished 10-8 in the regular season (9-5 in Northeastern Conference play) with yesterday’s victory. Singles players Gabe Ochonski (6-1, 6-2), Jimmy Cunningham (6-0, 6-1) and Emmitt Pierro (6-0, 6-0) all prevailed for Danvers, as did the first doubles team of Brian Daly and Kevin Hodgkins 6-2, 6-4).

Beverly 5, Revere 0: The Panthers took all five points in straight sets to finish 12-6 as Northeastern Conference Large champs. Josh Cronin (6-0, 6-1), Peter Coletti (6-4, 6-1) and Antuan Tran (6-4, 6-2) won at singles for Beverly and Connor Irving/Ryan Santo (6-2, 6-3) and Eno Jahaj/Owen Bolas (6-1, 6-2) swept at doubles.

Masconomet 3, Hamilton-Wenham 2: A three set win at No. 2 singles by Jon Cabour (6-2, 2-6, 6-1) helped the Chieftains (13-3) win their regular season finale. Cam Netland (6-1, 6-1) won at No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles team Sam Gordon/Clay Greenberg (6-4, 6-2) also won. H-W’s winners were Woody Watson (3-6, 6-2, 6-1) and Reed Forsey/Adam Celata (7-6, 6-2).


Marblehead 15, Salem 3: Dean Fader scored five goals with one assist, Trevor Jones scored three times with one helper and Brad Knittle scored three times to pace Marblehead (15-3). Ian Maag added a pair and one assist, Ben Anderson scored once and Trevor Gelineau had one with an assist for the Magicians, who got an excellent performance from Nathan Maselek on defense.The Witches (11-9) got their goals from three Matts: Mat Muse, Matt Willson and Matt Jalbert. Will Meadowcroft had 14 saves in goal for the tournament bound Witches.
