Masco boys cross country still unbeaten

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

MASCONOMET SWEEPS TRI-MEET: The quartet of juniors Jay Polakiewicz, Liam Davis, Jake Moorman and Marco Caserta ran together and finished in 17:20, as the unbeaten Chieftains beat both Pentucket (16-45) and Manchester Essex (15-50).

In doing so, the Chieftains set up an undefeated showdown for the Cape Ann League Large championship with Newburyport next Wednesday at Bradley Palmer State Park. Both teams are currently 9-0.

Junior Scott Gilfeather placed sixth overall in a season-best time of 17:41 to round out the top five place winners for Masconomet.

Hamilton-Wenham wins two: Matt Gillis finished in second place overall in 18:06 to lead the Generals to wins over North Reading (24-31) and Triton (20-35). Dave Staats finished third for H-W (18:10), Jack Blatchford was fourth (18:17), Kevin Rutigliano took sixth (18:44), and Lucas Cruz-Nascimento placed ninth overall (19:16).

ipswich drops two: Dan O'Flynn's fourth place finish in 16:13 led Ipswich, which fell to Lynnfield (26-31) and Newburyport (17-46). Other solid performances were turned in by Michael Riddle (17:08) and Conner Whooley (17:10) for the 4-5 Tigers.

Pingree sweeps: Overall winner Carmine Piatendosi ran 19:08 to help Pingree beat Lexington Christian (18-42), Berwick (20-41) and Landmark (15-50). Lucas Reeves and Calvin Gonzalez also ran well.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Masco SWEEPS: Senior captain Shannon Eaton placed 10th overall in a time of 21:49, enabling Masconomet (8-1) to shade Pentucket (7-2) by a 27-28 score while also defeating Manchester Essex, 18-45. Mackenzie Shelgren led the Chieftains by finishing second (19:37), followed by Megan Collins in fourth (20:02), Mila Zernich in sixth (20:41) and Lily D'Agostino in seventh (20:44).

Hamilton-Wenham rolls: The Generals took the first eight spots in easily dispatching both North Reading and Triton by identical 15-50 scores. Meg Blatchford (21:50) and Kerry Phelan (21:51) finished 1-2 for unbeaten H-W (9-0) while the three Emilys — Emily Senning (21:52), Emily Horgan (21:53) and Emily Weigand (21:54) — rounded out the top five.

Ipswich falls in tri-meet: Sarah Keiran finished first overall in a time of 17:45 for the Tigers (2-7), who fell to Lynnfield, 20-37, and Newburyport, 20-43. Paige Sirois (21:45) and Tina Keiran (21:53) also ran well.

Pingree Wins two: Mary Kate Surrette hasn't lost a race this year and finished first again yesterday to help Pingree (8-0) beat Lexington Christian (15-48) and Berwick (19-41). Also running well were Amanda Monteforte and Erin Thomassen.

VOLLEYBALL

North shore tech/essex aggie 3, fellowship academy 0: Junior Grace McNally had 16 kills and 16 service points, as the Bulldogs (2-10) prevailed 25-15, 15-16, 25-20. Fellow junior Zoe Barnes added 11 kills while junior Kiley Morgan of Salem had her best setting match of the season.

Pingree 3, beaver country day 0: Senior setter Hannah Perkins of Hamilton played well at the net while also possessing a strong serve as the Highlanders improved to 3-6. Freshman Casey Torto also served very well for Pingree, which won 25-11, 25-11, 25-16.

Masconomet 3, revere 0: Lexi Simmons (18 digs, 8 kills), Erin Burns (17 assists), Brynn Wendel (10 digs, 5 kills), Abi Rose (12 assists), and Brittany Taylor (14 digs, 6 kills, 13 service points) all had big games for Masconomet (7-5), which won 25-20, 25-19, 25-20.

FIELD HOCKEY

Beverly 4, swampscott 0: Katie Pietrini, Natalie Shea, captain Nicole Woods and Kate Silvestri had the goals as the Panthers (10-0-1) kept on rolling. Pietrini, Woods and captain Erin Silvestri all had assists while Felicity Otterbein turned in her ninth shutout of the season, making four saves. Sam Jones was a defensive standout for the Panthers, as was Shea.

Making her first start in goal, junior Katie Samiljan was busy in making 14 saves for Swampscott (7-3-1).

Marblehead 4, Malden 1: The Magicians moved to 4-1 behind a goal and an assist each from Eliza Fitzgerald and Ellie Rousseau. Tyler Phillips and Anna Roy also scored while Sydney Andrews and Peri Bial impressed with their all-around play.

Peabody 5, Salem 1: Gina Casey's midfield effort helped the Tanners improve to 7-2-3 while Alaina Warren handled the offense with two goals. Joanne Frangais, Mary Votto and Ally Bortone also scored, while Diane Migneault had a strong game.

Danvers 5, Saugus 0: Seth Kamens had a goal and three assists to pace Danvers, which also got goals from Sarah Potter and Nicole Pszenny. Meghan Powers and Catherine Vega each scored their first of the season to give each member of the Falcon forward line at least one goal this year.

Phillips Exeter 2, Pingree 0: Senior midfielder and captain Katie Ober, senior defender Chess Petrillo and sophomore forward Jill Witwicki all played well for Pingree, which dropped to 5-5.

GOLF

Salem 39, peabody 33: Salem's No. 1 player, Tim Richmond, fired a two-under par 33 at Olde Salem Greens to win his match (6-3). Cam Darmody (6-3) and Matt Cocozella (71/2 - 1 1/2) were other big winners at Nos. 3 and 4, respectively, for the 8-5 Witches.

Winners for the Tanners (2-5) were Nolan Franney, Matt Correale and Steve Ferrante.

Swampscott 42, saugus 30: The Big Blue qualified for the Division 3 state tournament at Far Corner in two weeks with yesterday's win. Kevin Marescalchi (61/2 - 2 1/2), Matt Videtta (71/2 - 1 1/2), Victoria Malatesta (5-4) and Cameron Swigor (71/2 - 1 1/2) all recorded wins for Swampscott while Peter Wright and Derek Mayo halved their matches. Trevor Massey was medalist for the winners with a 37.

GIRLS SOCCER

PEABODY 4, SWAMPSCOTT 1: Hayley Dowd had a goal and an assist, giving her 15-12-27 totals this fall, as the Tanners (9-0-2) scored twice and dominated the second half to stay unbeaten. Victoria Digiacomo also scored to give her 11 goals and 18 points to date. Kasey Provost and Madison Doherty were the other goal scorers for Peabody, which got excellent defensive play from Christa Tremblay, Bianca Muscato and goalie Caitlin Lodi (9 saves).

Kelly Birchmore had given Swampscott (7-3-2) a quick lead four minutes in with an unassisted tally.

Waring 2, Camb. of Weston 1: Allie Hinrichs scored both goals for Waring, which improved to 7-2 with the win. Center-backs Eleanor Lustig and Brooklyn Stam were outstanding in the victory.

BOYS SOCCER

Salem 4, Gloucester 2: Gabrille Rodrigues scored three goals from the Witches (8-2-1), and Robert Abreu also scored in the win. Brion Likaj set the table with two assists, while Dimitri Flessas and Mitchell Osgood each had one helper.

Danvers 6, marblehead 0: Junior captain Eric Martin had two goals and two assists, while senior defender Ethan Collins also potted a pair of goals as the Falcons (9-3) qualified for the state tournament. Senior forward Jon Amico and junior defender Drew Piazza also scored for Danvers (6-0 in the NEC) while senior Brendan Murphy picked up another shutout.

Peabody 7, Beverly 1: The Tanners (6-3, 4-1 NEC) broke open what was a two goal game at half time with hat tricks from senior captains Colin Mahoney and Mike Chiappini. Vlasi Duni scored Peabody's other goal on a penalty kick while Joey Ramsay, Joe Baldwin and Scott Myers played well.

Swampscott 2, Lynn English 1: Junior captain Erick Verdu scored the game-winning goal with about five minutes to go to power the host Big Blue (4-4-3) to victory. Senior stopper James Beane also scored for the winners, netting his first varsity goal. Senior Patrick Kennedy stopped six shots in net and communicated very well with his defense.

Waring 2, Camb. of Weston 1: Henry Balf scored on a corner from Casey Balin in the final minute, and Waring went on to improve to 5-1. Charlie Gribble also scored while keeper Anders Ericsson had 10 saves and sweeper Teddy Lyman played very well.

NS Tech/Essex Aggie 1. Greater Lawrence 0: Sophomore Jason Searle scored on a feed from captain Jimmy Nebelski to lift the Bulldogs (3-10-, 3-3 CAC). Keeper Eric Martin had the shutout in net with eight saves.

Beaver country day 4, pingree 1: Ignacio Diaz scored the lone goal for Pingree (4-5-1), with teammate Matt Colbert assisting.

GOLF

Danvers 401/2, Beverly 311/2: The Falcons improved to 14-0 and clinched their sixth NEC it the last seven years with the Nos. five and six golfers doing the heavy lifting. George Merry, Dan McKenna, Colin Delaney, Paul D'Orlando and Kevin Daly won for Danvers while Beverly's winners were Kevin Dyer, Dustin Dube and Chris Sinclair.

Marblehead 53, Gloucester 19: The Magicians (7-3) got an outstanding round from Andrew Scholnick, who shot a par of 34 on the front nine at Tedesco. Also shooting well for Marblehead were Trevor Jones, Pitch Riley, Connor Green and Peter Cormier.

Masco. 166, Manchester Essex 142: Charlie May eagled the fifth hole at Essex and Alex Kane had an eagle on the third as the Chieftains (11-1-1) enjoyed two spectacular shots. May shot even par and had 36 points while Kane had 32, George May chipped in 29 points and Zack Staub added 25.

No. Andover 145, Ipswich 112: The Tigers fell, though Austin Rubino had a solid round and contributed 25 points.

MEN'S COLLEGE SOCCER

Endicott 5, Eastern Nazarene 0: The Gulls (4-6-3) rolled behind two goals from Alex Jorge and a goal with an assist from Ryan D'Amico. Kevin Gnecco and Nick Goldman also scored for Endicott while Aaron Kanter made four saves.

Salem St. 5, Daniel Webster 1: Rafael Santos exploded for four goals, and Salem native Max Mondestin scored his fourth of the year to round out the scoring as the Vikings (7-6) won with ease.

WOMEN'S COLLEGE TENNIS

Salem St. 8, UMass-Boston 1: The Vikings stayed unbeaten in the Little East and improved to 10-1 overall with the doubles pairs of Michelle McEwen-Lauren Turenne, Carly Muniz-Melissa Govertsen and Patricia Quartararo-Anna Yaskell remaining unbeaten on the year.

COLLEGE FIELD HOCKEY

Salem St. 1, St. Joseph's 0: Nicole Roy scored in the 70th minute with an assist from Nicole Bisbee and the Vikings (5-7) played enough defense down the stretch to make it hold up. Michaela Boyer made 10 saves for Salem State.
