For their excellence both in the classroom and in their respective athletic endeavors, Beverly High superstar swimmer Astrid Swensen and St. John’s Prep’s dominant wrestler, Ian Butterbrodt, have been named the Moynihan Lumber Student-Athletes of the Month for February.
Astrid is ranked ninth in her junior class of 323 students at Beverly High and sports a terrific 4.44 grade point average. She set a new Division 1 state championship meet record by winning the girls 100 yard butterfly in a time of 55.41 seconds. She set another school record in the 200 IM at the same meet, placing second in a time of 2:05.65, and her 400 freestyle relay team also took second in 3:38.19. Not to be outdone, Astrid swam as part of Beverly’s 200 yard medley relay team that took third at states in 1:52.71. During the regular season, she competed in seven of the nine events: 200 IM, 200 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke and 500 free.
Ian, a junior captain for the powerful St. John’s Prep wrestling program, went a perfect 14-0 in the month of February with 11 pins. The 220-pounder is an amazing 59-0 on the season with 37 pins, having captured the Division 1 North Sectional championship and the Division 1 state title. He will compete in the New England championships this weekend in Providence. Ian also carries an outstanding 4.54 grade point average at St. John’s Prep.
