JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — In her final tuneup for next month’s Boston Marathon, Shalane Flanagan left no doubt that all the training she’s put in is paying off.
The Marblehead native set a new U.S. record in winning the women’s crown at the USA 15km Championships Saturday, finishing in a blazing 47:03.
Flanagan’s time bettered the previous U.S. best time by 12 seconds; it was also a staggering 2 minutes and 22 minutes ahead of the second place finisher, fellow Olympian Janet Bawcom.
The 32-year-old Flanagan, who will be among a handful of favorites to win the women’s race when she runs her second Boston on April 21, took the lead after the first mile Saturday and never relinquished it. She was at 15:29 through 5K and 31:09 after 10K before cruising to victory.
