Weekend area roundup: Endicott softball gets off to hot start


The Endicott College women’s softball team started off its season in fantastic fashion yesterday in Claremont, Fla., shutting out both Bowdoin and Bethany (West Virginia).

The Gulls edged Bowdoin, 2-0, in their early-morning game. Nell O’Connor allowed only three hits and struck out five over seven innings. Rachel Couto and Chrissy Gikas each drove in a run for Endicott. Gikas, a freshman from Danvers, also finished the game with two hits and a run scored.

Jess Linden also had two hits in the win over Bowdoin.

Endicott improved to 2-0 with a 9-0 win over Bethany in five innings. Jaime Corda and Kate Shields each drove in a pair of runs while Gikas, Couto, Chanler Hospot, Sam Dibella, Alex Moise, and Alli Noyes each knocked in one run.

Courtney Blake picked up the win, allowing three hits, one walk and striking out one over five innings.


Endicott 24, Keene State 2: The Gulls blew out their opponents in their season opener in Winter Park, Fla.


Endicott 12, Wheaton 9: Emily Whitney scored four times as the Gulls improved to 3-1. Meghan Lennon added three goals and Callie Murphy contributed two goals and two assists. Elli Clayman also scored two goals and had one assist and Kirsten Thor also scored a goal for the Gulls.

Emerson 19, Salem State 3: The Lady Vikings fell to 1-3 despite two goals from Kelsey Russell. Erin Riley also had one goal for Salem while Kristen Caso assisted once.


UC Santa Cruz 3, Endicott 0: The Gulls put up a good fight despite losing in three games — 25-16, 25-17, 25-19. Tyler Bacon had 16 assists for Endicott, Brennan Lowe had six kills and Travis Netherton and Josh Anderson each pitched in five kills for the Gulls.


Swampscott’s Mahoney runs well at Nationals: Swampscott’s Matt Mahoney finished 13th in the country in the 2-mile at the New Balance Indoor Nationals this weekend. He ran a 9:13.64, which was a personal best and broke Peter Hale’s school record.
