2013-14 WRESTLER OF THE YEAR
St. John’s Prep Junior
For two years running, St. John’s Prep 220-pounder Ian Butterbrodt has been dominating the state of Massachusetts.
And after defeating Exeter, RI’s Carl Neff 6-5, Butterbrodt became the top 220-pound wrestler in all of New England.
After falling in the New England finals to Andrew Cavanna for his first loss last season, Butterbrodt downed Cavanna 8-0 in the first round of New England’s before going on to be crowned the champion this year.
“Ian dominated the defending champion in the quarterfinals,” said Prep head coach Manny Costa. “After the match I explained that he needed to remain mentally focused. You prepare a year to avenge a loss and you expect to be in a final then you still have to wrestle two more state champions to be champion.”
Butterbrodt set a new Mass state record going 63-0 with 41 pins. He was the Division 1 North champion, state champion and was the seventh New England champion in school history. He is also the fifth Eagle to go undefeated on the season.
“I’m proud of his (Butterbrodt’s) effort all season,” said Costa. “He worked hard all off season training and competing to be champion.”
In the last two seasons Butterbrodt is 120-1 and is a team captain. He holds a 4.38 GPA and credits coach Costa for helping him become the wrestler that he is today.
