Most people ski for fun.
Marblehead senior Charlie Thompson has had his fair share of good times on the slopes but ultimately, he skis because of the individual freedom the sport allows him. And because he’s good at it.
The Magicians senior captain won five regular season races before claiming sixth place in the Giant Slalom and ninth place in the Slalom at the MIAA State Tournament this winter.
“I love how it (skiing) is an individualized sport and the feeling you get when you are able to put together a solid run,” said Thompson. “And how it’s only up to you to make yourself better. You don’t have to rely on anyone else.”
Marblehead relied heavily on Thompson and the senior responded by winning the Mass Bay Ski League East as well as being named a member of the Massachusetts State Team.
Thompson had his best individual performance in Masco’s final regular season race at Blue Hills in the final team race of his high school career. He was named the Magicians’ team MVP and won the coaches award.
Thompson considers his biggest strengths as a skier to be his dedication and perseverance. He holds a 3.53 GPA and is currently undecided on his plans after high school. Though one things for certain, Thompson will always find time to do what he loves.
