Thursday's Area Roundup: Wheaton holds off late Salem State rally

Wheaton 6, Salem State 5: The No. 10 ranked team in the nation came to Salem yesterday and the Vikings (4-8) stranded the tying run on third in the bottom of the ninth in a tough loss at home. Salem State tied it, 4-4, on RBI by Kevin Salines and Brett Cahill in the fifth but Wheaton scored twice in the seventh to retake the lead. Cahill led the offense with two hits, Peabody native Andrew Guido threw a scoreless inning and Mike Lamothe and Ethan Trowt also had hits.


Endicott 9, Salem State 0: Endicott’s Olivier Joggi outlasted Salem State’s Matt Lee, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1, to set the table for a Gulls sweep. Evan Ross, Ben Randlett, Tim Forance, Michael Dolph and Justin Warshavsky won their singles matches in straight sets and Endicott (4-4) also won all three doubles matches.

Colby-Sawyer 6, Gordon 3: The Fighting Scots fell to 3-6 on the season in a non-league match at home.


Tufts 12, Endicott 11: The Gulls (4-4) scored three times in the last five minutes but couldn’t net the tying goal against the No. 15 ranked Jumbos at home. Caitlin Pratt and Holly Davis each had three goals for Endicott while Callie Murphy had two goals and one assist. Goalie Rachel Socolow stopped 12 shots.


SSU Drops Two: Salem State fell to Plymouth State, 12-1 and 5-4, in a doubleheader at home. Alyssa Bryan homered and drove in three runs in the 5-4 contest and Christina Cipriani had two hits and one RBI while Lauren Garchinksy and Michelle Flower also had two hits each in the opener.
