---- — St. John’s Prep sophomore wrestler Ian Butterbrodt didn’t capture a national championship this weekend, but he certainly marked his territory among the country’s elite wrestlers in his grade.
Butterbrodt, who wrestled in the 220-pound weight class for the Eagles this winter, took fifth place at the National High School Coaches Association Sophomore Nationals in Virginia Beach. Butterbrodt’s finish earned him All-American status.
“(I’m) very proud of him, his season and competing at an equal level with all the best in the nation,” St. John’s coach Manny Costa said. “He was right there with all of them.”
Butterbrodt won his first three matches over Jacob Vaxmonsky of Pennsylvania (10-1), Parker Kanpp of Ohio (3-0), and John Kramer of Tennessee (9-6). He then lost to New Jersey’s Zach Chokonis (5-2) to drop in to the consolation bracket, and fell to Knapp in a tie-breaker (3-2).
He defeated Robert Enmon of Florida (3-0) to take fifth place.
