Wednesday's area roundup: Power surge lifts Prep baseball

St. John’s Prep 12, Central Catholic 2: Senior Brandon Bingel hit a grand slam and drove in five runs while Tyler Noe (2-run shot) and Sawyer Billings (3-run shot) also went deep as the Eagles (3-1) won their third straight. Tommy Buonopane scored three runs and stole two bases and senior Dustin Hunt earned the win by striking out six over 4 2/3 innings.

Bishop Fenwick 6, Cardinal Spellman 1: Senior Andrew Lessard went the distance, allowing three hits and four strikeouts to get the win for the Crusaders. Junior Nick Bona had two hits and knocked in two runs for Fenwick, which had eight stolen bases as a team.

Lynn English 7, Salem 1: Cody Mercier scored on a first inning error, but that’s all the Witches could muster in dropping their season opener. Catcher Austin Connolly had his team’s only hit in the fifth inning and had a fine game defensively, while Ben Kapnis struck out five over four innings.

Whittier 3, North Shore Tech/Essex Aggie 1: Senior Alec Chongris pitched five innings and allowed one earned run. Freshman Matt O’Connell had the lone RBI and senior Tim Andersen scored the only run.

Pingree 11, Concord Academy 2: Freshman pitcher Cal Perry, now 2-0 on the season, had seven strikeouts and allowed one hit in his five inning performance as the Highlanders even out a 2-2 on the season. Erik Larsen went 2-for-3, including two doubles, while Nick Antenucci and Travis Jacques each had a pair of RBI.

Danvers 5, Swampscott 2: Anthony Garron delivered a big hit with a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth to help Danvers get the victory. A.J. Couto also had two hits for Danvers (2-0). Brandon Hyde got the win on the mound, going all seven and allowing three hits while striking out three.

Alex Cuchero pitched well for Swampscott (0-3) in defeat. Ryan January knocked in two runs for the Big Blue and Nunzio Marretti added a double.
