Thursday's area roundup: Beverly field hockey earns tourney berth

Beverly 6, Gloucester 1: Behind a two-goal effort from Molly Pitman the Panthers move to 9-1 on the season and qualified for the tournament in the win. Allie Sheehan, Nicole Woods, MaryCate Flaherty and Grace Otterbein added single markers, while Kate Silvestri and Amanda Marshall played well for Beverly.

Salem 1, Revere 0: At the start of the second half, Emma Williamson notched the only goal of the game with an assist from Joanna Coleman, to lift the Witches (3-7) to victory. Alexa Gilbert and Hannah Chasse played well on defense and Lauren Puleo stopped all seven shots she saw.

Swampscott 2, Danvers 0: Tori Thistle and Victoria Himiras scored the goals for the Big Blue (6-2-1), while Katie Pepel turned away 10 shots for the shutout.

Raquel Lesley played well for the Falcons (6-3-1), who were held off the scoreboard despite 10 corner chances.

Marblehead 3, Malden 1: Maggie Danforth, Madison Shea and Suzanne McCarthy scored for the Magicians (6-4) and Eliza Fitzgerald had a pair of assists.


Beverly 3, Swamspcott 2: Keeper Justin Carnavale had an oustanding game to keep the Panthers (5-5) in it early. George Hillois, Elias Crandell and Christian Goodwin took care of the scoring as Beverly rallied from a one-goal deficit to win.

Danvers 4, Salem 1: Freshman Jackson McPherson netted two goals as the Falcons improve to 6-1-3 on the season. Senior captain Zach Noring and junior Mark McCarthy also added goals, while Cam Bornstein turned away nine shots. Salem was up 1-0 for the majority of the first half, before Danvers tallied its first marker.

The Witches goal came from Nathan Russell with an assist to Connor Duncan. Tom Engstrom, Mat Muse and Ellajandro Smart played well for Salem.

Masconomet 1, Ipswich 0: The Chieftains improve to 9-1-1 overall and remain undefeated in the Cape Ann League.

David Dick was exceptional for the Tigers (5-5), as was Angus Mauser in goal.

Waring 6, Newman Prep 0: Matt Lyman had two goals for Waring (5-0-1), while Kyle Patrick, Aiden Wood and Isaac Stewart also scored in the victory.

Hamilton-Wenham 6, Amesbury 0: Russell Gregorian scored twice and assisted on two others, while Thomas David and Aaron Cannon each recorded a goal and an assist for the Generals (3-2-4). Bobby Bertagna and Aiden Prior each added goals, while Henry Eagar and Logan Appel split time in net for the shutout.


Beverly 4, Swampscott 1: Senior Caitlin Harty scored twice and added an assist as the Panthers (8-1-2) jumped ahead 4-0 and never looked back. Eva Gourdeau added a goal and an assist, Emily Melliger also scored and senior Diandra Crowley had a strong game in the back.

Masconomet 0, Ipswich 0: Tiger Hannah Lynch earned the shutout while defenders Emily Brengle, Claire Gardner, Sydney Law and Ellie Swenson played well for Ipswich (4-2-4). Masco keeper Katy Pelletier made eight saves to earn another shutout and Sarah Katz played well on defense (6-0-3).

Hamilton-Wenham 3, Amesbury 1: Emma Beane, Caroline Gribbell and Maddi Berthoud handled the scored as the Generals improved to 7-2. Jillian Kefalas and Girbbell had assists while Sam Charette, Phoebe Shaw and Carolyn Cook help control possession.

Marblehead 9, Lynn English 0: Elise Joyce and Jess Atrich each netted a pair of goals to help lift the Magicians (6-2-1) over English. Sarah Cullen, Meg Ryan, Abby Leblanc, Meg McCarthy and Mia Bongiorno also scored, while Lauren Unterborn and Sarah Snadecki split the shutout.


Notre Dame 3, North Shore Tech/Essex 0: The Hawks move to 3-8 after being swept 12-25, 11-25, 21-25.


St. Mary’s wins at Fresh/Soph Meet: The Spartans earned the top spot at yesterday’s Catholic Central League Freshman/Sophomore Meet at Bishop Fenwick. St. Mary’s finished with 52 points as Sarah Ryan (14:23), Sarah Corbett (14:34) and Larissa Bogomolov (14:39) were among its top performers.


St. Mary’s takes top spot at Fresh/Soph Meet: The Spartans came in first overall at the Catholic Central League Freshman/Sophomore Meet, earning 22 points. Mike Cerulli (11:27), Cody Murtagh (11:31) and Tom Mackin (11:32) had strong finishes for St. Mary’s.


Salem 37, Lynn Classical 35: The Witches (5-8) earned their third win of the week. Taking matches for Salem were Kyle Doherty (6-3), Nate Clark (61/2-2 1/2), A.J. Darmody (61/2-2 1/2) and Wes Schaejbe (5-4).

Beverly 41, Peabody 31: The Panthers (10-0) clinched the Northeastern Conference title with strong rounds by Shamus Desmond (36, winning 61/2-2 1/2), Ryan Anderson (37, winning 7-2) and Chris Sinclair (39, winning 6-3)

Marblehead 46, Gloucester 26: The Magicians improved to 8-5 behind victories from Charlie Thompson, Matt Sholnick, Jake Hempel and Jake Kramer.

Amesbury 137, Hamilton-Wenham 133: Kevin Heppner (27 points), Scott Hughes (25), Cole Farnham (23) and Tom Riccio (20) were among the Generals (3-8) high scorers.

St. John’s Prep 230, Barnstable 244: Freshman Chris Francour and sophomore Steven DiLisio each shot even par 36 in the Eagles (10-2) road win.


Endicott 3, Curry 0: The Gulls (11-9) stayed perfect in league play by winning 25-10, 25-17, 25-12. Freshman Lily Benabou led the way with eight kills and three aces while Erika Trudon had 15 digs to go with three aces of her own.
