Editor’s note: “Hidden Gems” will take a look at a few of the weekend’s under-the-radar performers in North Shore high school football.
With Peabody holding on to a 30-29 lead and host Winthrop driving with 1:35 to play, Mercedes sacked Vikings QB Dylan Driscoll for a 5-yard loss that ate chunks of time off the clock. Thanks in large part to Mercedes’ key play, the Vikings were eventually forced to attempt a field goal on the game’s final play, but it was no good and the Tanners left Miller Field victorious.
Hamilton-Wenham defensive end
Against a Manchester Essex offense that ran a lot of screens, under routes and quick passes, Rogers helped the Generals’ D by banging receivers and tight ends at the line of scrimmage. He also set the edge nicely and dropped back into pass coverage when needed. Rogers’ biggest play of the contest with under a minute left when he sacked QB Craig Carter with the Hornets trying to tie the game.
Danvers wide receiver
A junior who also plays free safety, Valles had a terrific game in the Falcons’ big 29-26 win at Lynn Classical, which kept them atop the Northeastern Conference South standings. He was ferocious as an outside edge blocker from his wide receiver spot against the Rams and also had two big catches along the sidelines for first downs.
