Wednesday's area roundup: Prep golfers capture Catholic Conference title

GOLF

St. John’s Prep golf coach Larry O’Neill had fears that his team might overlook its final regular season match yesterday.

With the Division 1 state championship looming on Monday, the Eagles made sure they took care of business, defeating Catholic Memorial 220-240 to wrap up the Catholic Conference championship for the second year in a row.

Sophomore Steven DiLisio shot a 1-under par 34 at George Wright Golf Club to lead the way. The title was the Prep’s 20th in O’Neill’s 25 years coaching.

”That makes us 16-2 overall on the year and combined with a couple days ago (winning the Div. 1 North sectional), that takes care of two of our three goals,” O’Neill said. “We have one left on Monday.”

Freshman Mark Turner shot a 36 while seniors Max Burt and Justin Serowik each added 37s.

The Eagles will try to win their first state championship since 2010 and 13th all-time on Monday at Black Swan Country Club in Georgetown.
